AbacusNext Market Opportunities, M&A and Geo Expansions

In March 2018 AbacusNext released a mobile app for OfficeTools, its industry-leading practice management software. Available for both iOS and Android, the OfficeTools mobile app leverages AbacusNext’s cloud expertise to provide anywhere, anytime access to essential firm data—right from the palm of your hand. The app will function as a companion to the desktop version of OfficeTools. Accessible on any mobile device, the app puts the power of OfficeTools at users’ fingertips. With the app, users can log time as they make calls in transit, launch all business-critical communications with the Contacts feature, and view upcoming activities and appointments. The app also enables users to add notes and syncs with the user’s OfficeTools database every 10 minutes. Security is always paramount in everything AbacusNext does, and the increased functionality of the mobile app hasn’t come at the cost of data protection.

In May 2016, Abacus Data Systems acquired Amicus Attorney, which will become an integrated part of the Abacus family. Abacus and Amicus serve hundreds of thousands of attorneys in the US and around the world. By combining their collective technology and expertise, the newly integrated group will deliver the widest range of Best in Class practice management, time, billing and accounting applications powered by compliance-ready, Desktop-as-a-Service (DaaS) workspaces designed to eliminate capital expenditure and the burdens associated with IT management.

AbacusNext Risks and Challenges

The market for legal practice management applications market has changed considerably since Gavel&Gown came on the scene in 1993. Low-priced alternatives from new and existing Cloud competitors are likely to undercut the appeal of Amicus Cloud especially with Gavel&Gown’s reliance on its consultants, whose profitability could be on the line when it comes to Cloud sales. The good news is that Gavel&Gown has succeeded in migrating 100,000 current user licenses from its traditional desktop version to Amicus Cloud. Migrating the other 150,000 will take more time because some may still be running older versions that are based on legacy databases such as Visual Foxpro.
