Allscripts Strengths, Domain Expertise, and Key Differentiators
Allscripts has an extensive portfolio of healthcare applications encompassing everything from ambulatory clinical software to ePrescribing products as well as practice management and revenue cycle management solutions. Allscripts Sunrise is its integrated, complete EHR solution for hospitals, health systems, and physicians, combining clinical capabilities with revenue and administrative solutions.
Allscripts branded its population health management portfolio CareInMotion. CareInMotion offers healthcare providers comprehensive solutions to the population health challenges they most often face, which may include care transitions, care team management, and patient engagement.
In February 2018, Allscripts announced its new EHR, Avenel. Mobile-first and cloud-based, Avenel creates a communitywide, shared patient record, using machine learning to reduce a time for clinical documentation, all while designed to work like an app instead of traditional software.
Allscripts Recent Developments
In March 2020 Allscripts launched a new software solution for specialty medication management, delivered by Veradigm, it's business unit focused on the payer and life sciences.
Veradigm’s AccelRx is designed to simplify meeting the requirements needed to dispense the increasing number of specialty medications being prescribed. AccelRx leverages broad industry partnerships built over decades of e-prescribing and prior authorization to deliver a user-friendly solution that is helping providers spend less time on phone calls and managing faxes while driving higher patient medication adherence.
In February 2018, Allscripts completed the acquisition of Practice Fusion, Inc., a Delaware Corporation. Practice Fusion offers an affordable certified cloud-based EHR for traditionally hard-to-reach small, independent physician practices. This acquisition is now a part of Veradigm, the newly launched payer and life sciences business unit of Allscripts.
Allscripts Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) Activities
In July 2020 Strata Decision Technology, a pioneer and leader in the development of cloud-based financial planning, analytics, and performance tools for healthcare, today announced that it has acquired EPSi from Allscripts for $365 million. EPSi is a leading provider of financial decision support and planning tools for hospitals and health systems.
The transaction is expected to close later this year, subject to regulatory approval and customary closing conditions. Allscripts has owned the EPSi business since it acquired Eclipsys, Inc. in 2010. Upon closing of the transaction, the EPSi customer base and associates will transition to Strata. The two companies will operate independently until the deal closes.
Allscripts continues to be in acquisition mode, further building out its client base in the ambulatory space by buying Practice Fusion for $100 million in cash. The deal is expected to close in the first quarter of 2018, officials said.
The addition of San Francisco-based Practice Fusion, whose cloud-based electronic health record is aimed primarily at small, independent physician practices, will give Allscripts a larger footprint in outpatient settings. It's the second move in less than six months – following the acquisition of McKesson's health IT business in August 2017 – designed to expand the Chicago vendor's nationwide market share.
Some 30,000 ambulatory sites, serving about 5 million patients each month, currently use Practice Fusion EHR, practice management, e-prescribing, lab, and patient portal technology.

In 2020 Allscripts ambulatory business has seen increasing momentum with 18 new physician practices selecting Allscripts this year for ambulatory and population health solutions to help provide safer patient care, streamline operations, and improve revenue for their organizations. Among them are Family Medical Associates of Raleigh, Urology Centers of Alabama, Urology Associates of Mobile, AllCare Health, Synovation Medical Group, and others.
As of 2017, approximately 75,000 physician practices, 3,400 hospitals, and 100,000 coordinated community care organizations use their products and services.
Allscripts Market Opportunities, M&A and Geo Expansions
The last year has witnessed the continued consolidation of the EHR market with Allscripts acquiring McKesson Corporation’s hospital and health system IT business, and Enterprise Information Solutions for $185 million in cash in August 2017.
Another deal involving Allscripts was announced in early 2018 as the company occurred acquired Practice Fusion for $100 million in cash. The deal is expected to close in the first quarter of 2018. With these deals occurring, and other consolidation a number of questions arise, particularly regarding what changes users can expect with the McKesson, Practice Fusion, and Allscripts products.
Allscripts Risks and Challenges
Allscripts seems to be stuck in neutral over the past few years. Its lackluster performance in the EHR market pales that of competitors like Cerner and Epic. Its big data and analytics business trails rivals like Optum. The pandemic-induced challenges facing integrated delivery networks and national healthcare chains are significant, which could render their EHR push secondary. Allscripts' decison to sell EPSi - its financial planning and analytics offerings - to Roper's Strata underscores Allscripts' desire to backtrack from its big data strategy. All of these could unleash a series of cost-cutting and reprioritization moves at Allscripts in the coming quarters.
Allscripts Ecosystem, Partners, Resellers and SI
In August 2020 Allscripts and Israel’s Sheba Medical Center have formed a partnership to accelerate the pace of artificial intelligence technologies and to improve patient care through the hospitals’ ARC Innovation Center. ARC, which is an acronym for accelerate, redesign, and collaborate, is the innovation arm of Sheba Medical Center which has the vision to transform healthcare by 2030.
ARC Innovation brings new technologies into the hospital and community healthcare ecosystem to further improve patient care. It enables data fluidity and integration amongst innovators; scientists; startups; high-level developers; large and small companies; investors; and academia all under one roof. The organization focuses on digital health technologies, including precision medicine, big data, and predictive analytics, telemedicine, and mobile health. There are six medical tracks, with a senior Sheba physician leading each: telemedicine, precision medicine, digital innovation focusing on big data and artificial intelligence, augmented and virtual reality, rehabilitation, and surgical innovation.
As part of this joint initiative, Allscripts’ open system will be accessible in space for researchers and developers, and ARC will serve as the platform for cooperation with Allscripts. In addition, Sheba Medical Center’s clinical and research staff and Israeli startups will assist by focusing on healthcare information technology. ARC and Allscripts will proactively seek out ideas and initiatives to enhance the development of new telemedicine and mobile solutions, including a future electronic health record encompassing home hospitalization medical information.
Allscripts primarily sells direct. Allscripts enables third parties to integrate with or develop enhanced functionality for its clinical solutions through the Allscripts Developer Program (ADP). More than 135 certified applications and devices are available today and several in development.
