Castlight Health Recent Developments

In April 2021, Castlight Health hired top digital health sales manager Frank Jennings as senior vice president and chief sales officer. Jennings brings more than 25 years of sales strategy and business development experience to Castlight, serving most recently as a chief commercial officer at Covera Health, a clinical analytics company focused on reducing misdiagnosis. Prior to Covera, Jennings played a key leadership role at Doctor on Demand as a strategic advisor and senior vice president of Sales, and earlier as vice president in new business development for Castlight. Digital Health Veteran is to lead the company’s Employer Sales Function to support accelerated market demand for Next-Gen Health Navigation.

During the Covid 19 pandemic, Castlight Health launched a couple of solutions to ease the situation, such as Working Well for Higher Education, a solution that helps academic institutions manage safe campus re-entry; Working Well for employers, it helps employers of any size manage safe workforce re-entry; and the directory of COVID-19 testing sites, it provides a clear, reliable source of testing site locations including information about the criteria for testing.

In October 2019, Castlight entered into a 30-month enterprise license agreement with Anthem, Inc., effective January 1, 2020, that extends and expands the Company's existing relationship with Anthem first announced in 2015. The agreement includes Castlight’s core care guidance technology, the Engage health navigation platform, and a new, non-exclusive license for some of Castlight’s underlying health navigation platform technology services, such as transparency and personalization. For these services, Anthem will pay the Company license fees of $168 million over 30 months. The Company began recognizing subscription revenue starting January 2020.

Castlight Health has more than 260 customers around the world. With the contract with Anthem from October 2019, Anthem from a partner became a Castlight Health's customer. Other customer wins include Aggreko, Pomeroy, American Electric Power (AEP), General Cable, State of Mississippi Department of Finance and Administration, Carlson, Cummins, Eaton Corporation, Indiana University, Indiana University Health, Indiana State Personnel Department, Liberty Mutual Group, Microsoft Corporation, Mondelez International, Purdue University, Safeway, and Honeywell.

In December 2020, Castlight Health entered into an agreement with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama (“BCBSAL”), a regional Blue Cross Blue Shield licensee, to offer a complete health navigation solution for BCBSAL's largest employer clients.

In November 2020 – Castlight Health entered into a new collaboration with American Eagle Outfitters, Inc. (NYSE: AEO), a global specialty retailer, to deliver a unified health and wellbeing benefits platform to its eligible U.S. associate population through Castlight’s technology platform Castlight Complete. AEO Inc. will also deploy Castlight’s return to work solution, Working Well, for associates in the U.S. and Canada as they return to work.

In October 2019, Castlight extended it's collaboration with Anthem. The agreement renews the existing relationship for the Castlight-powered Engage health navigation app, including the deployment to more than one million National Account members in Anthem’s affiliated health plans, as well as the Castlight provider search and pricing technology.

In March 2018, Digital health clinic Maven, partnered with Castlight Health, which will enable Castlight customers to easily integrate Maven into their benefits platform. Castlight's unique partner ecosystem provides a two-way integration for unified and seamless user experience to Maven's complete family benefits platform.

Castlight Health Market Opportunities, M&A and Geo Expansions

As employers in the US continue to see healthcare costs rise at a rate of 6% annually, and some studies even anticipate medical cost trends could be as high as 10% in 2021 due to the impact of deferred care during the pandemic in 2020. Many solution providers are trying to address this challenge. Castlight is also seizing the opportunity to offer employers the implementation of its navigation solution, which would result in both the employer and the employee experiencing significant financial savings.

In November 2018, Castlight Health completed multiple successful launches of Castlight Complete, which combines the company's wellbeing and care guidance capabilities in a single application. These launches included large employers comprising more than 300,000 eligible lives in complex benefits environments, with a diverse array of programs and point solutions.

In December 2017, Digital medicine company Big Health partnered with Castlight Health. Now through Castlight's suite of digital health and wellness solutions, employers will be able to seamlessly deliver improved sleep and mental health to their employees with Big Health's digital sleep improvement program Sleepio.

In May 2016, Castlight signed a strategic, multi-pronged business alliance with SAP to deliver integrated healthcare technologies aimed at helping lower healthcare costs, improve outcomes and increase benefits satisfaction. It is now integrated with the SAP Connected Health platform and enter into a distribution relationship with SAP SuccessFactors HCM Suite.

Castlight Health Risks and Challenges

In the last year's report, Apps Run the World noted that Castlight Health's revenue is increasingly dependant on Anthems contribution, amounting to 27% of the company's total revenue. This is a continuing trend, as Castlight's sales strategy in 2020/21 still heavily relies on relationships they have developed with large providers of health insurance, especially Anthem, Inc., but also Cigna Corporation, and Blue Cross Blue Shield Alabama. Revenue from Anthem, under their agreement, constituted approximately 47% of the total revenue for the year ended December 31, 2020. If the SaaS Agreement were to be terminated by Anthem under its terms, or if Anthem breaches the terms of the SaaS Agreement, their business would be substantially ruined.

These integrations result in higher engagement with third-party programs, based on personalized recommendations and an omnichannel approach to communications.
