Cerner Corporation Strengths, Domain Expertise, and Key Differentiators
Cerner solutions are offered on the unified Cerner Millennium architecture and on the HealtheIntent cloud-based platform. Cerner Millennium is a person-centric computing framework, which includes integrated clinical, financial and management information systems. This architecture allows providers to securely access an individual's electronic health record ("EHR") at the point of care, and it organizes and proactively delivers information to meet the specific needs of physicians, nurses, laboratory technicians, pharmacists, front- and back-office professionals and consumers. Its HealtheIntent platform is a cloud-based platform designed to scale at a population level while facilitating health and care at a person and provider level. On the HealtheIntent platform, Cerner offers solutions that aggregate, transform and reconcile data across the continuum of care, enabling key stakeholders to manage the health of populations, improve outcomes and lower costs. Cerner also has an EHR agnostic platform, CareAware, that facilitates connectivity of health care devices to EHRs, allowing for more efficient and effective care.
Cerner Corporation Recent Developments
In October 2021, Cerner created a new business unit focused on providing real-world data solutions and research services to life sciences companies to support clinical trials. The division, called Enviza, combines Cerner's data business with Kantar Health's data, analytics and research expertise to help accelerate discovery, development and deployment of therapies and advance clinical research.
In February 2019 Cerner introduced Chart Assist, a new AI-enabled workflow, to join a suite of solutions designed to reduce physician burnout, enhance the clinician’s experience and increase productivity. Cerner’s suite of AI-enabled solutions goes beyond traditional processing and focuses on user efficiency to identify gaps and inconsistencies within the patient record. These advancements will help providers address patient care and validate diagnoses, ultimately helping to reduce the physician workload, while supporting the financial strength of the health system.
Recently, Cerner willingly participated in a study reported by MedStar Health that is designed to help push for changes to address risks to patient safety and clinician burnout. Cerner has been actively engaged in addressing burnout as an industry challenge, with a focus on engaging the physician in the building of EHR workflows to better reflect how they deliver care. The use of analytics, research and feedback is key to continuously optimize solutions to deliver a more personalized and intuitive care delivery experience.
Cerner Corporation Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) Activities
In June 2022, software maker Oracle has closed its deal to acquire health IT company Cerner. Austin-based Oracle finalized a stock tender offer with 69.2% of all Cerner shares being tendered to the acquiring company. The all-cash deal valued Cerner at $95 a share. The transaction, announced in December 2021, is Oracle's largest acquisition ever. The database giant Oracle said it obtained the required antitrust approvals for the deal, including European Commission clearance, and with that cleared the final regulatory hurdle for its pending $28.3 billion acquisition of Cerner.
In April 2021, Cerner Corporation acquired Kantar Health, a division of Kantar Group, for $375 million in cash, subject to adjustment. Kantar Health’s rich life sciences expertise will be combined with Cerner’s robust collection of real-world data (RWD) and technology and is expected to accelerate innovation in life sciences research and improve patient outcomes worldwide.
In October 2019, Cerner acquired AbleVets, to fine-tune its IT offerings for the federal space. Earlier, in February 2015, Cerner acquired the Health Services business from Siemens AG, which offered a portfolio of enterprise-level clinical and financial health care information technology solutions, as well as departmental, connectivity, population health, and care coordination solutions globally.

Cerner offers a wide range of intelligent solutions and services that support the clinical, financial and operational needs of more than 26,000 facilities worldwide, including hospitals, physician practices, laboratories, ambulatory centers, behavioral health centers, cardiac facilities, radiology clinics, surgery centers, extended care facilities, retail pharmacies, and employer sites.
Cerner Corporation Market Opportunities, M&A and Geo Expansions
While COVID has hurt Cerner clients financially by significantly reducing elective procedures and other margin contributors, Cerner's intense focus on supporting them through the pandemic has enabled us to strengthen and extend client relationships and actually help plan for their post COVID recovery. As an example, Cerner recently announced the expansion of its Banner Health relationship to include Cerner's Revenue Cycle Management Solution. With 28 hospitals in 6 states, Banner is one of the country's largest health systems.
Cerner Corporation Risks and Challenges
Cerner appears to be staking its future on securing the biggest possible electronic health record contracts possible. Winning them and executing them flawlessly, which often require heavy involvement of system integration partners, will be a challenge for Cerner. On the other hand, Cerner is aggressively expanding its services business, which has grown faster than its systems sales over the past few years. Though services revenue has always been a major component of healthcare IT spend, its future of chalking up double-digit growth may be in question. After all, one of the reasons for the US healthcare system overhaul underway has been to reduce reimbursement by clamping down on services outlay through automation.
Cerner Corporation Ecosystem, Partners, Resellers and SI
Cerner primarily sells direct and it relies on hardware and ISV partners such as HP and Oracle. Furthermore, Cerner’s ecosystem partners can take advantage of more than 250 APIs, including a growing number of standards-based FHIR APIs which we believe will become the norm for the health IT industry in the future.
In August 2020, Cerner announced new collaboration with Amazon that allows consumers to easily connect vital health and well-being information with their broader health care teams. The Amazon Halo, a new service dedicated to helping customers improve health and wellness, can connect to Cerner’s technology where individuals can opt-in to share activity, sleep, body fat percentage and other important wellness data from the comfort of their home. Historically this type of data has been siloed or difficult to obtain. Wearable technology, such as the Amazon Halo, can help achieve greater interoperability across health care when integrated directly into a patient’s electronic health record (EHR). Longtime Cerner client Sharp HealthCare is the first health system to implement Amazon Halo in the health care setting. The first health system to implement the Amazon Halo integration is Cerner client Sharp HealthCare, a leading health care provider located in San Diego with 2,600 physicians across four acute care and three specialty hospitals.
