e-MDs Strengths, Domain Expertise, and Key Differentiators

e-MDs provides integrated electronic health records, practice management software solutions, a revenue cycle solution, and credentialing services for physician practices and enterprises. The company offers hosting and cloud solutions: ICD-10, a clinical tool; population health management software, provider enrollment credentialing, hospital credentialing and privileging, and CVO credentialing services.

e-MDs Recent Developments

In February 2019, eMDs unveiled Aria Health Services. The expanded offering, which comes on the heels of eMDs’ recent acquisition of Aprima, provides healthcare organizations of all sizes with access to a deep pool of resources to support their revenue cycle management (RCM), credentialing, and enrollment operations. Aria will allow clients to reduce the administrative burden, complexity, and disruption that these normally time-intensive and detail-oriented tasks require—allowing organizations to focus instead on patient care and outcomes.

In July 2018, e-MDs partnered with CoverMyMeds, a specialist in electronic prior authorization (ePA) solutions, to deliver real-time benefit checks, and electronic prior authorization (ePA). The integration will be available to customers utilizing eMDs Electronic Health Records, including Plus, Practice Partner, Lytec MD, Medisoft Clinical, and Solution Series via RxBenefit Clarity and the CoverMyMeds app. The integration also serves as a foundation to implement future innovative solutions without additional development effort.

e-MDs Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) Activities

In December 2020, CompuGroup Medical acquired eMDs. The acquisition price is around USD 240 million (EUR 203 million).

In January 2019, eMDs has acquired Aprima Medical Software, a provider of electronic health record (EHR) and practice management (PM) software, and revenue cycle management (RCM) solutions to ambulatory care organizations. This acquisition makes them a world-class provider of fully integrated financial, administrative and clinical solutions that are used by more than 63,000 providers in over 26,000 practices and hospitals across the world. eMDs' acquisition of Aprima represents an exciting growth opportunity for both businesses.

The unique combination of technology and services prepares eMDs to offer the most powerful and comprehensive portfolio of solutions available—and that means greater impact, increased productivity, and less operational burden for healthcare providers.

eMDs and Aprima independently embarked on platform modernization programs before the acquisition. The union of these efforts promises to simplify the deployment of new technology across their client bases, as well as position the new company to deliver some of the most modern and capable solutions available to the market.

eMDs company will remain by the same name until the integration is finalized. When the integration is completed, the merged company will go as eMDs and Aprima. It will be headquartered in Austin, Texas, with additional facilities throughout the United States and India. Pickell will lead the merged organization, while Michael Nissenbaum, the current Aprima CEO, will serve in an advisory role during the integration. The rest of the leadership team will be picked from the executive teams from both companies.

e-MDs Market Opportunities, M&A and Geo Expansions

In June 2019, eMDs stated that its EnterpriseRx 3.0 prescribing solution has now been certified by Surescripts for both E-Prescribing 6.1 and Medication History 3.0 messages, as meeting the National Council for Prescription Drug Program’s (NCPDP) SCRIPT Standard v2017071. eMDs is one of the first vendors in the industry to achieve this certification. By law, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) demands that all providers transmitting electronic prescriptions must be using the SCRIPT 2017 by January 1, 2020.

By certifying well in advance of the deadlines, users of the latest versions of eMDs Solution Series, eMDs Practice Partner, and eMDs Plus can be guaranteed that their systems, which use the EnterpriseRx 3.0 prescribing tools, now reach the standards. Additionally, this early certification enables eMDs customers to have enough time to prepare and work through the transition to SCRIPT 2017, which enforces significantly more rigid data standards to improve patient safety and more efficient workflows. eMDs continues to provide ongoing education to its customers to help them understand these required changes and how they could impact patient care and their operations.

eMDs acquired several software technology assets from McKesson Business Performance Services (McKesson). The combined company’s products and services are prognosticated to be used by nearly 55,000 providers nationwide. The company hopes the acquisition will benefit small- to medium-sized practices and broaden e-MDs' presence in the ambulatory IT market.

e-MDs Risks and Challenges

The market for their products and services is competitive, and the company must expect additional competition from established and emerging companies in the future. Their market represents a rapidly changing technology, global shifts in the healthcare system, evolving user needs, and impactful regulatory and reimbursement changes.
