SCORES Analysis

IFS Industrial and Financial Systems AB Strengths

Industrial and Financial Systems (IFS AB) is a Swedish enterprise resource planning (ERP), enterprise asset management (EAM) and enterprise service management (ESM) vendor specializing in the aerospace and defense vertical.

In fact IFS was the one of the few ERP vendors that have operating units dedicated to the defense industry. IFS Defence was a joint venture between IFS and BAE Systems, one of its key customers and partners.

But on December 31, IFS AB and BAE Systems plc completed the restructuring of their joint venture IFS Defence Ltd. As a result of the restructuring, the trade, assets, and employees focused on IFS Applications were transferred into a new 100- percent owned subsidiary to IFS UK Ltd, IFS Aerospace & Defence Ltd. The remaining business of IFS Defence was retained by BAE Systems plc, which also became a 100- percent owner of the former joint venture.

Recently IFS has been playing up its expertise in the Oracle ecosystem.

In October 2012, IFS announced that it has earned Oracle Exadata Optimized and Oracle Exalogic Optimized status through Oracle PartnerNetwork. By combining IFS Applications with the Oracle Exadata Database Machine and Oracle Exalogic Elastic Cloud, IFS customers are able to leverage benefits such as faster time to implementation and increased performance.

IFS also announced the availability of IFS-in-a-Box. Now customers have less need to worry or resource the initial installation of IFS Applications as this new ‘in-a-Box’ offer comes preinstalled on Oracle Database Appliance. IFS Applications uses the Oracle Database 12c database for its database tier, a Java-based middle tier that supports Oracle WebLogic, and a Windows-based client application.

To give customers and partners more deployment flexibility, IFS made its software available from Microsoft Azure. With a cloud deployment option, IFS relieves customers of infrastructure worries so they can focus more on their business.

The decision for Microsoft Azure became even more compelling when, in June 2013, Microsoft and Oracle announced a partnership to help customers and software service providers develop and run Oracle software in Microsoft Azure. The partnership gave IFS and its customers the flexibility to deploy Oracle software—including Java, Oracle Database, and Oracle WebLogic Server—on Windows Server Hyper-V or in Microsoft Azure and receive full support from Oracle.

IFS customers can also use their existing Oracle licenses to run both their IFS application server and the Oracle database server in Microsoft Azure. The full suite of IFS Applications, including all enterprise resource planning (ERP), enterprise asset management (EAM) and enterprise service management (ESM) modules, can run on Azure.

Customers wanting to use IFS Applications in the cloud can leverage Azure either as an Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) and self-manage their IFS Applications, or to have their IFS Applications hosted and managed as a service (SaaS). The IaaS offering is available now and the SaaS offering, including both technical and application managed services, will be rolled out over the next six months. To validate the real-world application of the offering, IFS has been working with beta customer Ebara, a precision instruments manufacturing company.

In October 2015, IFS announced a number of updates to its enterprise software suite IFS Applications 9. Among new updates were: new in-memory capabilities, enhanced visualization of manufacturing processes, extended support for rental management Improved group consolidation functionality.

Earlier, In May 2015, IFS launched the IFS Managed Cloud on Microsoft Azure and successfully closed its first sales during the summer months. The first customers went live later in 2015 and there are now customers running IFS Managed Cloud on Microsoft Azure in Europe and North America.
