In May 2020, Mailchimp helped small businesses get online quickly during the COVID‑19 crisis with custom domains free for 5 years along with their free website builder. Users could search for and obtain their free custom domain, like .com, .co, .net, etc.
In April 2020, Mailchimp invested up to $100M that helped drive new and ongoing business for their small business customers through price discounts, product upgrades, add-ons, and more. This included $10 million worth of Mailchimp service for existing customers who wanted to continue using Mailchimp’s platform but needed some financial support during the period and offered three months of free Standard service for nonprofit and public service organizations responding to the COVID-19 crisis.
In October 2019, Mailchimp launched the ability to purchase domains and build websites for free. Since then, they have made significant improvements to the features and how they tie into their marketing platform. Courier produces a bi-monthly magazine and newspaper full of educational and inspirational content for modern entrepreneurs and small businesses, as well as a newsletter, podcast, and events. Mailchimp provided Courier with resources to help make more content available in more places to more people. Their team continued to operate independently out of London and remained a separate entity in order to focus on what they’re already doing so well.
In June 2019, Mailchimp acquired Atlanta-based startup Sawa. Sawa is an automated graphic design platform that instantly and beautifully assembles its customers’ photos, logos, and copies into design assets that adhere to their brand standards. Sawa has built a great product, which attracted some impressive customers in a short period of time. As part of this acquisition, Sawa’s founder, Francis Tao was hired to help integrate Sawa’s technology into Mailchimp and create a seamless experience for customers.
