Mentor, a Siemens Business Strengths, Domain Expertise, and Key Differentiators
Mentor Graphics Corporation provides electronic design automation software and hardware solutions to design, analyze, and test electro-mechanical systems, electronic hardware, and embedded systems software worldwide. During the 2015, the company introduced new versions of three products: the market-leading FloTHERM and generalpurpose FloEFD software for computational fluid dynamics, and the Valor Process Preparation software for electronics manufacturing. The company made several announcements in the transportation space. A trio of new Capital Systems tools enable cost and weight optimization in the automotive and aerospace markets. The Mentor Automotive A2B Analyzer, the industry's first third-party development platform supporting the Automotive Audio Bus (A2B) technology developed by Analog Devices, Inc. The combination reduces development time, cost and complexity of in-vehicle audio networks. In other automotive news, electrical systems for all new General Motors vehicle platforms are now being designed using Capital tools, with design data for existing vehicle platforms also being converted to Capital software.
Mentor, a Siemens Business Recent Developments
In June 2019 Mentor Graphics released the final phase of the Valor software NPI design-for-manufacturing (DFM) technology that automates printed circuit board (PCB) design reviews where the PCB technology and manufacturing processes are employed. This latest release completes the realization of the Valor intelligent, manufacturing process-driven DFM solution, adding assembly DFM checks to the new process flow. This new technology was developed in response to the customers’ need for an easier way to get accurate, meaningful DFM analysis without having every user be a DFM expert. To accomplish this, Mentor began a program three years ago to re-architect the Valor DFM solution to: make it easier to set up and maintain DFM rules so that the results are relevant, simplify the execution of the DFM application, and integrate DFM into Mentor’s Xpedition software layout application so that designers are aware of manufacturing concerns during the concurrent design process. In May 2019, Mentor Graphics introduced the Capital Load Analyzer software product to help simplify aircraft electrical design compliance and certification. Modern aircraft systems, such as electrical flight control systems and in-flight entertainment systems, require more power, have more electrical content, and have higher compliance risk due to increased complexity. For 2019 the market for commercial air cable/harness assemblies is projected at approximately $2.4 billion, growing to $3.3 billion in 2024. The new Capital Load Analyzer is the industry’s first electrical systems technology that leverages automation and digital data continuity to facilitate regulatory compliance. Current methods for verification and analysis rely on fragmented data and are typically conducted manually using drawings and spreadsheets after the major electrical design work is complete. Uncovering problems during this late program phase forces costly design iterations and missed critical milestones, such as Customer Acceptance and Type Certification, impacting aircraft revenue recognition. Mentor, revealed an artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML) development kit and added AI/ML enhancements to two tools to help its customers deliver smarter, AI/ML-powered ICs to market faster. The new Catapult software High-Level Synthesis (HLS) AI Toolkit and HLS ecosystem are designed to help customers jumpstart the development of complex machine learning IC architectures. Meanwhile, Mentor, it's adding AI/ML infrastructure throughout the Calibre platform, and is launching the first two of these AI/ML-powered technologies: Calibre Machine Learning OPC (mlOPC) and Calibre LFD with Machine Learning – both of which leverage machine learning software for faster, more accurate results. These new offerings further expand Mentor’s fast-growing portfolio of AI/ML-powered solutions. In June 2018, Mentor, a Siemens business, launched Calibre RealTime Digital – a new physical verification tool that works in concert with popular commercial place-and-route environments to ensure “Correct-by-Calibre” routing, and help design teams cut weeks off of IC signoff. Calibre RealTime Digital is the sister product to Mentor’s multi-award-winning Calibre RealTime Custom tool introduced in 2011 for custom IC design flows. Targeting the full-chip and block-level digital market, the Calibre RealTime Digital tool is ideal for teams designing primarily ASICs and SoCs for a wide range of end-products including mobile phones, automobiles, wired and wireless infrastructure equipment, and a plethora of industrial and commercial applications.
Mentor, a Siemens Business Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) Activities
In 2018 Mentor acquired Solido, a pioneer in AI/ML-enhanced EDA tools. Solido’s customers include 15 of the world’s 20 largest global chip design firms. More than 3,000 design engineers use Solido’s AI/ML-powered tools to drastically speed development for many of the world’s most popular and sophisticated semiconductor designs in production today.
