OSIsoft has launched a program to expand the options for acquiring and/or using PI System Technology. With OSIsoft Cloud Services, customers can obtain PI functionality (data sharing, storage) through the cloud insteead of standing up their own server. The company has also launched a program to embed connectors and data storage in manufacturing equipment, IoT Gateways and other devices. Vendor customers include Dell, HPE, Rockwell Automation, Emerson and others. OSIsoft develops software for managing, understanding and using data for the Industrial Internet of Things.

The company's PI System is an open data infrastructure that captures data from sensors, equipment and other devices and structures it in a cohesive way so that engineers and others can reduce costs, make better decisions or improve productivity.

Historically, most customers bought the PI System to manage data at plants.

In recent years, equipment vendors have begun to integrate PI System technology into their products to create intelligent, connected devices.

The PI System can be used and bought as on-premise software, through enterprise agreements, or purchased through subscription services managed through the cloud.

While the PI System is the main product, OSIsoft also makes ancillary applications such as PI Vision (data visualization) and integrators (for streaming data to cloud applications.) OSIsoft primarily focuses in seven markets--oil and gas; chemicals; utilities; pharmaceutical manufacturing; water; pulp and paper; and mining--and it is expanding into food and beverage, data centers and transportation/logistics. The integrator strategy at OSIsoft is aimed at linking operational technology and operational data to IT systems and cloud computing platforms such as Azure IoT and AWS.

One customer, CEMEX, reduced the time required for preparing data for company-wide manufacturing reports from 744 hours to five minutes.

The company’s Connected Services customers, meanwhile, are using the PI System to deliver preventative maintenance and other services to their customer base in a cloud-like fashion.
