OSIsoft Strengths, Domain Expertise, and Key Differentiators
"OSIsoft develops software for managing, understanding, and using data for the Industrial Internet of Things. The company's PI System is an open data infrastructure that captures data from sensors, equipment, and other devices and structures it in a cohesive way so that engineers and others can reduce costs, make better decisions or improve productivity. Historically, most customers bought the PI System to manage data at plants.
In recent years, equipment vendors have begun to integrate PI System technology into their products to create intelligent, connected devices. The PI System can be used and bought as on-premise software, through enterprise agreements, or purchased through subscription services managed through the cloud. While the PI System is the main product, OSIsoft also makes ancillary applications such as PI Vision (data visualization) and integrators (for streaming data to cloud applications). OSIsoft primarily focuses in seven markets oil and gas, chemicals, utilities, pharmaceutical, manufacturing, water, pulp and paper, and mining and it is expanding into food and beverage, data centers, and transportation/logistics.
The integrator strategy at OSIsoft is aimed at linking operational technology and operational data to IT systems and cloud computing platforms such as Azure IoT and AWS. A divide often exists between OT and IT in OT technologies for monitoring and managing machinery or transportation systems are essential for productivity and safety. The data gathered in managing operations, however, often become landlocked. Integrating that data with IT systems is one of the primary objectives of IoT systems. OSIsoft's integrator applications exist to accelerate the process by reformatting operational data for specific applications."
OSIsoft Recent Developments
In May 2020, launched edge data store as part of its pervasive data collection strategy. With Edge Data Store, customers can remotely monitor critical assets to improve uptime while minimizing the costs and safety risks associated with manual, in-person inspections. Edge Data Store is software for industrial IoT that allows operators to collect, store, and access data from assets and sensors in remote environments.
Earlier the same year in January, OSIsoft signed an Enterprise Agreement (EA) to further accelerate Mitsubishi Chemical's digital transformation. The Enterprise Agreement with OSIsoft will support Mitsubishi's digital transformation initiative by enabling Mitsubishi to deploy OSIsoft's PI System broadly across its operations.
OSIsoft Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) Activities
In March 2021, AVEVA completed its $5 billion acquisition of operational data platform developer OSIsoft in a move that gives AVEVA and its partners the capabilities to help industrial customers accelerate their digital transformation efforts.

OSIsoft Market Opportunities, M&A and Geo Expansions
In June 2019, OSIsoft launched the OSIsoft Cloud Services for general availability. OSIsoft Cloud Services (OCS) is a cloud-native, real-time data management system for unifying and augmenting critical operations data from across an organization to accelerate industrial analytics, data science initiatives, data sharing, and other digital transformation projects.
In April 2019, OSIsoft entered into an Enterprise Agreement (EA) with Alizent-Asset Interactive (Alizent), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Air Liquide focused on digital transformation and the Industrial Internet of Things. The Enterprise Agreement Program will enable Alizent to deploy OSIsoft's PI System broadly across Air Liquide's operations to optimize production, minimize environmental impacts, and improve logistics, among other services.
IoT is one of the large growth markets in software and one of the major hurdles in data management. Some utilities must track over 25 million assets. The heterogeneous mixture of devices in factories means data often gets siloed. OSIsoft's PI System can normalize this. OSIsoft expects growth in direct sales as well as OEM sales. OSIsoft also launched a program to expand the options for acquiring and/or using PI System Technology. With OSIsoft Cloud Services, customers can obtain PI functionality (data sharing, storage) through the cloud instead of standing up their own server. The company has also launched a program to embed connectors and data storage in manufacturing equipment, IoT Gateways, and other devices. Vendor customers include Dell, HPE, Rockwell Automation, Emerson, and others. Third, it is expanding its partner program to attract more third-party developers to write applications that rely on PI System data streams. Finally, it is expanding the portfolio of connectors and integrators for bringing data into PI and exporting it to other platforms.
OSIsoft Risks and Challenges
More and more companies are exploring this market. OSIsoft will thus experience more competition. One of the biggest questions is whether other software vendors will make products that directly compete with the PI System or whether they opt to embed PI into their existing products.
OSIsoft Ecosystem, Partners, Resellers and SI
"In early 2020, OSIsoft and DERNetSoft, Inc. entered into a partnership to create and deploy an energy marketplace for cities and communities to scale adoption and integration of Distributed Energy Resources (DER). The combination of OSIsoft's community systems approach to data and the DERNetSoft marketplace solution, an AI-based cloud platform, creates a replicable and scalable approach for entire cities and communities to effectively engage with their utilities and DER providers. In June 2020, OSIsoft added Mitsui Technology Information as a new Value Added Reseller (VAR).
In May 2019, Senseye has joined the Partner EcoSphere at OSIsoft, a leader in operational intelligence, to deliver its automated condition monitoring product to help PI System customers on their digital transformation journey. In April 2019, Montreal, Canada and San Francisco, California - Maya Heat Transfer Technologies (Maya HTT) has expanded its strategic product alliance with OSIsoft LLC, a leader in operational intelligence, as part of its plan to bring its Datacenter Clarity LC platform to smart buildings with an initial focus in healthcare and aviation.
In September of 2018, OSIsoft LLC unveiled a Value Added Reseller (VAR) Program to accelerate the development of solutions for digital transformation and the Industrial Internet of Things. The initial participants in the VAR program are LYNX, Electro Controles del Noroeste (ECN), and ATIsoft in Latin America. More VARs are set to be announced in the upcoming months in Europe and Asia. OSIsoft has more than 300 partners and strategic alliances. In May 2017, SoftBank became an equity investor and part of the plan is to partner with SoftBank portfolio customers. Recent partnership wins include Esri, root9B, Metrix, Mtell, Microsoft, Cisco and others."
