ShotSpotter Strengths, Domain Expertise, and Key Differentiators

ShotSpotter provides precision-policing solutions for law enforcement to help deter gun violence and make cities, campuses and facilities safer. The company’s flagship product, ShotSpotter Flex, is the leading gunshot detection, location and forensic analysis system, and is trusted by over 100 cities. ShotSpotter Missions uses artificial intelligence-driven analysis to help strategically plan patrol missions and tactics for maximum crime deterrence.

ShotSpotter Recent Developments

In March 2021 ShotSpotter launched its ShotSpotter SiteSecure for Retail program to provide outdoor gunfire detection for retail chains and malls. ShotSpotter SiteSecure is a gunfire detection solution that alerts retail security personnel within seconds of a shooting incident around their stores and parking lots, protecting retail shoppers and associates by enabling faster response by security, law enforcement, and medical personnel. Fatalities and violent incidents in retail spiked to an all-time high in 2020, increasing 40 percent since 2016, according to the latest D&D Daily retail crime report1. The findings revealed that 88% of the fatalities were from gunfire and that parking lots experienced the highest retail violence, followed closely by stores and malls.

ShotSpotter’s own gunfire data also showed a significant increase in retail area shootings, rising 42 percent from 2019 to 2020 in areas with ShotSpotter coverage. The increase includes 5,141 confirmed gunfire incidents within a quarter-mile of retail establishments in 2019, to 7,299 in 2020. The retail establishments represented a mix of grocers, discount/dollar stores, big-box retailers, home improvement/DIY, and supply chain/distribution centers that fell within U.S. coverage areas for ShotSpotter.

SiteSecure’s core technology uses acoustic sensors to listen for loud, impulsive sounds that could be gunshots. Using a combination of machine learning and human review, incidents are quickly verified and alerts are sent to law enforcement and security teams including a precise location of the incident, a number of rounds fired, and tactical information. The alerts provide a critical time advantage that enables security officials to quickly mobilize and safely mitigate the threat. SiteSecure’s technology is already used in over 100 cities across the U.S. to provide public safety personnel with a critical time advantage needed to act quickly and confidently in a crisis situation.

In December 2020 ShotSpotter launched a new gunshot incident review and analytics tool – ShotSpotter Insight. The new web-based software application provides crime analysts, investigators, and command staff with a single source for all historical gunshot activity detected by the ShotSpotter system and the ability to uncover important shooting details and patterns that can help solve gun crimes. Insight is a key supporting application included in a subscription to the flagship ShotSpotter Respond gunshot detection solution, formerly known as ShotSpotter Flex. Using an extensive array of filters and search parameters, enables users to quickly identify specific incidents and provides investigators with a shot-by-shot animation of a shooting event showing details of the location and sequence of each shot. The software highlights other nearby incidents that may be potentially related based on the relative distance and time of occurrence and also makes it easier to visualize and report on gun violence trends in ShotSpotter coverage areas.

In 2019, ShotSotter updated its product ShotSpotter® Missions, an AI-driven crime forecasting and patrol management software tool. The new enhancement to ShotSpotter Missions enables current and future ShotSpotter gunshot detection customers to regularly and accurately update crime and gunfire forecasts.

ShotSpotter Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) Activities

In November 2020 ShotSpotter acquired Leeds, LLC, doing business as CrimeCenter Software. The acquisition will expand ShotSpotter’s suite of law enforcement solutions with the CrimeCenter line of investigative case management software, which ShotSpotter estimates will increase the company’s U.S. law enforcement total addressable market by over 45 percent.

CrimeCenter Software is a leading provider of cloud-based investigative case management software for law enforcement agencies. The case management platform helps agencies modernize every phase of an investigation and accelerate casework with easy-to-use software tools. The New York Police Department (NYPD) has been using a version of CrimeCenter for the last five years and the system currently serves over 4,000 users. NYPD is also a ShotSpotter customer. CrimeCenter Software has more than 30 employees and is based in Newark, New Jersey. With the closing of the acquisition, ShotSpotter paid $17 million in cash and stock and may pay an additional $5 million earn-out over the next two years.

In August 2021 ATI has teamed up with ShotSpotter. This month ShotSpotter will deploy its innovative ShotSpotter Investigate solution for a one-year pilot with the NHTIC. ShotSpotter Investigate will be used as the central digital case folder for the NHTIC, streamlining the efforts to capture, analyze, connect the dots and provide reporting and real-time intelligence to involved agencies across the United States.
