IBM Cloud for Skytap Solutions enables enterprises to migrate and modernize their core business applications, including IBM AIX or Linux on IBM Power Systems or VMware virtualizations on x86. Skytap Market Opportunities, M&A and Geo Expansions
In September 2019, Skytap made a collaboration with Microsoft to bring its purpose-built cloud service for legacy applications, including IBM POWER-based solutions, to Microsoft Azure. The service will provide support for heterogeneous application stacks, including native support for POWER workloads running on AIX, IBM i, and Linux. Skytap will preview its service on a new class of Microsoft Azure bare metal this year.
In February 2018, Skytap introduced Skytap Cloud Private Network Connection (PNC). PNC creates a dedicated, point-to-point network connection from customers datacenter to any Skytap Cloud region. Skytap Cloud PNC delivers high-speed, low latency data transfers that allow customers to bypass Internet-based connections, which often come with subscription fees and unexpected outages. Now, customers can migrate data to Skytap Cloud even faster, turbo-charging workflow performance for your most important applications.
Skytap Risks and Challenges
In August 2019 Cloud services company Skytap lays off 25 workers in the first major change under the new CEO.
Enterprise cloud services company Skytap is laying off 25 employees, or around 12 percent of its workforce, in an effort to “optimize” its operations. The cuts came across the business and come less than two weeks after the appointment of Bradley Schick as CEO, who replaced longtime leader Thor Culverhouse.
This is the second round of layoffs in less than a year for Seattle-based Skytap, which also cut 25 jobs from its marketing and sales teams in December 2018.
In March 2018, Skytap hired John Ludeman as senior vice president of engineering to support the company's continued growth and evolution. All of his previous experiences led to an interest in Skytap's unique value proposition. Cloud-native leads the hype cycle and has clear benefits for new applications, but the less exciting reality is that the majority of big businesses run on applications that are years, if not decades, old and can't be easily migrated to hyperscale clouds. What's more, these traditional applications still have great value to enterprise organizations, but their monolithic nature and legacy components are limiting growth and positive change.
