Slack Strengths, Domain Expertise, and Key Differentiators

Slack is a channel-based messaging platform. With Slack, people can work together more effectively, connect all their software tools and services, and find the information they need to do their best work, all within a secure, enterprise-grade environment.

Slack Recent Developments

Slack has announced a variety of product launches and partnerships in 2020. Product launches include new analytics and admin features, new enterprise security features, a new user interface on both desktop and mobile versions of the Slack app, and the introduction of Slack Connect, which allows users from up to 20 different organizations to collaborate in the same channel.

Slack also announced expanded partnerships with AWS and Atlassian, as well as a Microsoft Teams Calls integration. 2019 saw upgrades to workplace apps on Slack including the launch of Workflow Builder, which makes it easy for anyone to automate routine tasks with workflow templates. Also in 2019 was the launch of a new and improved desktop application, improving speed and performance, as well as the launch of Enterprise Key Management for Grid.

Slack Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) Activities

In July 2020, Slack acquired Rimeto, a four-year-old startup that provides customers with more detailed employee directories and profiles.

In 2018 Slack acquired Astro, a company with deep expertise in email infrastructure and maker of the popular Astrobot for Slack. In Astro, Slack brought on a team that collectively has built the industry's best mail and messaging tools like Zimbra, Acompli (acquired by Microsoft, and the foundation for Outlook Mobile), and Mumbo (acquired by LinkedIn). This is a natural next step for the company as channel-based collaboration becomes the default way of working.

Slack Market Opportunities, M&A and Geo Expansions

In February 2020, IBM picked Slack over Microsoft Teams for its 350,000 employees. The win comes just moths before Slack filed a competition complaint against Microsoft Corporation before the European Commission.

In July 2018, Slack acquired Robots & Pencils Missions to make it easy for non-tech teams to streamline work.

In August 2018, Slack added an additional $427 million of investment at a post-money valuation of more than $7.1 billion. This Series H equity round is in addition to the $841 million previously raised. The lead investors are Dragoneer Investment Group and General Atlantic, joined by funds and accounts advised by T.Rowe Price Associates, Inc. and funds advised by Wellington Management, and Baillie Gifford and Sands Capital, as well as existing investors.

Slack Risks and Challenges

Similar to other highflying startups, there have been growing pains with Slack. In March 2015, Slack reported a security breach that prompted the vendor to make two-factor authentication available to its users. Given many of its users are accessing Slack via their mobile devices, security protocols will continue to be a hot topic for any organization considering and/or authorizing their teams and employees to send and receive sensitive or privileged information over the messaging platform.

The more popular Slack becomes, the more it will be competing with the corporate email system as the de facto standard for workers to communicate with one another. And security will always be the overriding concern before Slack becomes the standard messaging system in the executive suites as well as for groups of team workers large and small.

Slack Ecosystem, Partners, Resellers and SI

In April 2019 Slack reached a big milestone in their relationship with Japan by opening a new office in Otemachi, Tokyo as an efficient, transparent communication space.

Slack primarily sells direct. Slack's technology partners are: Salesforce, GSuite, Workday, Atlassian, Zendesk, Dropbox SAP, Oracle, ServiceNOW and others. Adittionally, Slack has service partners. Slack’s services partners guide companywide, transformative initiatives that power workplace collaboration. Some of them are Robots & Pencils, Adaptavist, Cprime, Onix, TNG, and many more.
