In July 2021, Uber Freight and Transplace have entered into a definitive agreement for Uber Freight to acquire Transplace for approximately $2.25 billion, consisting of up to $750 million in common stock of Uber Freight’s parent company, Uber Technologies, Inc. Uber Freight will acquire Transplace from TPG Capital, the private equity platform of alternative asset firm TPG. Uber Freight’s acquisition of Transplace will create a serious competitor in the logistics technology platforms market, with large managed transportation and logistics networks in the world. The takeover is part of Uber’s efforts to look for revenue streams beyond cab aggregation.

In September 2020, Transplace took over LeanCor Supply Chain Group, a Florence, Kentucky-based consulting firm focused on end-to-end supply chain consulting, training, solutions, and lean manufacturing principles. LeanCor was founded in 2005 by Robert Martichenko and grew to more than 100 employees. The deal was Transplace’s third this year, following the acquisitions of Lanehub and ScanData and the financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

In June 2020, Transplace acquired ScanData Systems, Inc. (ScanData), parcel transportation management solutions (PTMS) company. ScanData’s enterprise-class, multi-carrier, parcel shipping solution streamlines and optimizes carrier selection, booking, label printing, tracking, invoice reconciliation, and Business Intelligence reporting at scale. The solution covers shipping and logistics needs across the entire parcel life cycle.

In January 2020, Transplace acquired Lanehub, a cloud-based platform, and a community that encourages shipper-carrier collaboration by automatically identifying and connecting companies with complementary freight lanes to save on shipping expenses. Transplace, an Uber Freight Company Risks and Challenges

There is a strategic rationale for the acquisition of Transplace, although it's a little bit surprising to see Uber Freight acquire a managed transportation company rather than another digital broker—though this does expand their product offering and market position, and potentially could significantly accelerate their path to profitability.
