About the Customer
Exelon is the nation’s leading competitive energy provider, with 2015 revenues of approximately $34.5 billion. They do business in 48 states, D.C. and Canada.
Exelon is one of the largest competitive U.S. power generators, with more than 32,700 megawatts of owned capacity. The company constellation business unit provides energy products to about 2 million residential, public sector and business customers.
Scope and Challenges
Each of Exelon’s operating companies has its own unique core applications—including long-running proprietary systems for billing, outage monitoring, and reporting. Oracle Mobile Cloud Enterprise Service lets Exelon deliver data from those systems via microservices to its customer-facing channels. The cloud-based microservices architecture enables Exelon to deliver new features to customers faster and react to new customer expectations, such as chatbots.
Furthermore, in 2018, Exelon put its database on autopilot and eliminated hours of database administration by selecting and deploying Oracle Autonomous Data Warehouse.
Outcome and Implications
Backed by its key differentiators like fault-tolerance through application clustering, security updates and software patches easily done online and a fully integrated hardware and software infrastructure, the broadening of the Oracle Autonomous suite comes at an opportune time just as enterprise customers and developers are evaluating a range of possibilities to address their immediate and long-term pain points.
"We didn't want to be in the business of building hardware solutions, with building our own clusters from scratch, the value add is more on the analytics and the data itself and we don't want to be in the business of configuring databases and tuning them." -said Michelle Ferrara, IT Vice President, Enterprise Wide Solutions at Exelon.
