Dassault Systemes Strengths, Domain Expertise, and Key Differentiators

Dassault’s size, its base and market presence in Europe and its long experience in industrial and medical systems are all strengths in the worldwide enterprise software market. It is leveraging its longtime strengths in product-design software (e.g., CATIA); in customer user consoles (3DEXPERIENCE) – adding new business in the Life Sciences market segment.

Dassault Systemes Recent Developments

Dassault Systemes Q321 total revenue rose 12% driven by strong Licenses & Other revenue growth of 24%. For the fiscal year 2021 Dassault expects revenue growth of 10% to11%, which means they can expect revenue of more than €4.80 billion.

Dassault Systemes Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) Activities

In October 2020, Medidata, a Dassault Systèmes company acquired the digital biomarker business of MC10. MC10’s offerings will bring novel clinical analytics and biosensor capabilities to Medidata’s existing Patient Cloud solutions in ePRO (patient-reported outcomes), eCOA (clinical outcome assessments), and biomarker discovery. This will enhance Medidata’s capabilities of integrating data from wearable sensors – including clinical grade metrics – to help customers successfully virtualize clinical trials.

Biggest acquisition in recent years was Medidata Solutions, a deal that closed in the summer of 2019. Dassault’s acquisition valued Medidata shares at more than $92 each, resulting in a $5.8 Billion purchase price. The aim of the acquisition was to support Dassault’s 3DEXPERIENCE platform for life sciences. Separately, in 2020, Dassault acquired NuoDB, a cloud-native, distributed database engine that also supports Dassault’s 3DEXPERIENCE software platform.

Earlier, in January 2019, Dassault acquired IQMS, a manufacturing ERP software company, for $425 million. With the acquisition of the California-based IQMS, Dassault Systèmes extends the 3DEXPERIENCE platform to small and midsized manufacturing companies seeking to digitally transform their business operations. IQMS’s software – on-premise EnterpriseIQ and software as a service WebIQ – deliver an all-in-one solution to mid-market manufacturers for managing engineering, manufacturing, and business ecosystems by digitally connecting order processing, scheduling, production, and shipping processes in real-time. IQMS’s solutions are used by 1,000 customers based primarily in the U.S. whose 2,000 manufacturing facilities in 20 countries produce for the automotive, industrial equipment, medical device, consumer goods, and consumer packaged goods industries. Customers include Westfall Technik, KKSP Precision Machining, AMA Plastics, Donnelly Custom Manufacturing, FlowBelow Aero Inc., Global Interconnect, Inc., Jabil Packaging Solutions, Schnipke Precision Molding, Steinwall Inc., Scientific, Inc., Sturgis Molded Products, Tribar, and Ventura Manufacturing Inc. IQMS’s 2017 revenue was around $56 million.

Dassault Systemes Market Opportunities, M&A and Geo Expansions

Dassault is investing heavily in Life Sciences companies and technologies, and it is adding to the 3DEXPERIENCE platform it acquired in recent years. The company is anticipating rapid growth in Life Sciences, which will add to its core strengths in manufacturing, aviation, transportation, and mobility. Dassault is also counting on its sustainability investments to generate more revenue in energy and industrial accounts looking to add applications that benefit the world’s environments. In terms of geographies, the Americas and EMEA generate the most software revenue, but the company sees opportunities in Asia, with some recent big wins in China.

In April 2020 Medidata, a Dassault Systèmes company launched myMedidata, an advanced, intuitive platform for patients to enable flexible participation in clinical trials for new medicines and vaccines. myMedidata provides a unified experience for patients, encompassing all of the capabilities of Medidata’s industry-leading, regulatory-compliant Rave platform, and Patient Cloud tools. This first release of myMedidata includes a research-based COVID-19 symptom tracker, that is designed to support research studies and advance scientific understanding of the virus. It will be made available to Medidata customers free of charge. This app will provide sponsors the ability to collect symptoms directly from research participants who may not otherwise be able to continue with traditional site visits. It also allows researchers to recruit large registries of individuals to monitor their health status with respect to COVID.

Dassault Systemes Risks and Challenges

Amd the global uncertainty, Dassault is investing heavily in Life Sciences, envisioning faster growth in that segment. In October, 2021, the company reported growth across all geographies – Americas saw 12% growth; Europe saw 9 % growth and Asia saw 13% growth. However, inorganic growth, achieved via Dassault’s mergers and acquisitions (M&A) in recent years, must be balanced by organic growth within the company’s chosen market segments.

Dassault's transition to the Cloud is likely to be gradual given the massive amount of legacy assets its PLM systems have generated. Dassault Systemes continues to grow its portfolio of software solutions and processes available on the cloud. Difficulties introducing such solutions at the desired speed, with the appropriate pricing model and with the right level of quality could impact the company’s growth and future results and give rise to technical and legal challenges. The progressive roll-out of these services and their distribution also involves the deployment of new sales, support and management processes (for example, processing orders and billing) and the necessary development of expertise in those areas.
