Mavenir Strengths, Domain Expertise, and Key Differentiators
Mavenir is dedicated to accelerating the transformation of software-based networks and reshaping network economics for Communications Service Providers (CSPs). With a comprehensive, end-to-end product portfolio spanning every layer of the network infrastructure—from 5G applications and service layers to the packet core and radio access network (RAN)—Mavenir is at the forefront of delivering advanced, cloud-native solutions that enable innovative, secure, and seamless user experiences.
Mavenir Recent Developments
In February 2024, Mavenir announced the launch of its Open vRAN solution, powered by 4th Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors with Intel vRAN Boost. This new offering delivers a cloud-native, high-performance, and energy-efficient platform optimized for latency-sensitive and compute-intensive mobile network workloads. The adoption of Intel’s latest processor technology represents the most recent advancement in Mavenir’s ongoing optimization of Open RAN solutions, continuing its momentum built over three generations of Intel Xeon Scalable processors.
Mavenir Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) Activities
In August 2021, Mavenir acquired Telestax, a leading Communications Platform as a Service (CPaaS) enablement and application provider for the communications industry. The acquisition strengthens Mavenir Engage—Mavenir’s omnichannel messaging monetization and customer engagement platform—by expanding its CPaaS capabilities and enhancing its value proposition to service providers.
Mavenir previously acquired Aquto, a provider of mobile-sponsored data and data rewards solutions. Aquto’s cloud-based platform enhanced Mavenir’s portfolio of carrier revenue generation products by enabling integration with the mobile marketing and advertising ecosystems. Earlier, Mavenir Systems was acquired by Mitel in a $560 million transaction, marking the conclusion of its original formation. Two years later, a new chapter began with the merger of Xura, the Mavenir Systems assets from Mitel, and the startup Ranzure—resulting in the formation of the current iteration of Mavenir.

Mavenir serves over 325 operator customers across 120 countries, including prominent names such as Deutsche Telekom, Dish Network, eNet, and Imagine Communications Ireland, among others.
After several years of testing and trials, in April 2023, Mavenir was selected as the primary partner for Virgin Media O2's (VMO2) inaugural large-scale Open RAN deployment. As both the systems integrator and principal technology supplier, Mavenir will play a key role in VMO2's official commitment to a commercial Open RAN rollout.
In February 2024, Three UK launched an urban small cell initiative in Glasgow, aimed at addressing network congestion in the city’s inner districts. The project leverages Mavenir's hardware and software solutions to enhance network capacity and performance. While there has been significant emphasis on the Open RAN aspect of the initiative, Mavenir is providing both the equipment and the software necessary for the deployment.
Mavenir Market Opportunities, M&A and Geo Expansions
In May 2024, following the successful raise of $850 million between 2021 and 2023—including a $500 million minority equity investment from Koch Strategic Platforms—Richardson-based Mavenir announced an additional investment of up to $75 million from an existing investor. While the identity of the investor was not disclosed, Mavenir stated that the new capital will further support the execution of its business strategy, which remains firmly focused on achieving end-to-end 5G transformation.
Mavenir Risks and Challenges
Mavenir faces challenges, including Moody's downgrade, with a Caa1 rating indicating high credit risk. The drop in sales, particularly in radio access network (RAN) products, has led to a market share decrease and expulsion from the top-five mobile core vendors. The company's heavy reliance on Dish Network adds vulnerability, especially with delays in deploying Mavenir's solutions. Moody's attributes the downgrade to economic uncertainties, slower-than-expected radio deployments, and a significant delay by a major customer. With open RAN investments and R&D costs exceeding 50% of revenue, Mavenir's aggressive growth strategy and governance risk may further impact its financial outlook.
Mavenir Ecosystem, Partners, Resellers and SI
Mavenir’s Open RAN Partner Ecosystem expands deployment options for operators by enabling seamless integration of innovative, cloud-native Open RAN solutions. Serving as the end-to-end systems integrator, Mavenir simplifies the deployment process and delivers a comprehensive, flexible offering that rivals traditional hardware-centric proprietary solutions.
The Open RAN Partner Ecosystem includes a diverse range of industry leaders such as Dell, Intel, Fujitsu, Sercom, Meta, VMware, and Kubernetes, among others. This broad collaboration enables operators to benefit from a robust and interoperable Open RAN framework supported by best-in-class technology providers across the ecosystem.
Research Methodology
Data used in research reports are derived from publicly available documents, continuous surveys of applications vendors, customers, resellers, Independent Software Vendors, systems integrators and other verifiable sources.
Vendor shares and market forecast results are based on a combination of existing databases as well as demand side and supply side research conducted throughout the year with validation from vendors, customers, channel partners and documentations such as earnings releases and 10Q and 10K filings, vertical industry studies, regional and country-level statistics from public and private institutions(i.e. colleges, universities, government agencies and trade associations).
