Accela Strengths, Domain Expertise, and Key Differentiators

Accela provides a market-leading platform of SaaS solutions that empower state and local governments to build thriving communities, attract and grow businesses, and protect citizens. From planning, building, licensing and permitting, to asset and service request management, finance, environmental health and more, Accela's SaaS offerings level the playing field for small and medium governments and enable small agencies to use the same software as the big cities.

Powered by Microsoft Azure, Accela's open and flexible technology helps agencies address specific needs today, while ensuring they are prepared for any emerging or complicated challenges in the future.

Accela Recent Developments

In January 2019, Accela launched the Civic Application for Environmental Health. It is a software solution that enables health departments to modernize how they deliver services by automating critical activities such as granting permits, managing inspections, and resolving complaints, to significantly enhance their ability to protect public health.

The Environmental Health Civic Application is the newest offering in Accela’s Civic Applications suite. These are out-of-the-box solutions which accelerate the technology implementation process to speed time-to-value and reduce costs, and provide functionality based on best practices for government agencies. Civic Applications come with pre-configured workflows and business logic, specific permit types, pre-built user notifications, field-worker functionality, and reports designed specifically for specific departments. Civic Applications are built on the Accela Civic Platform, which includes an enterprise-class workflow engine, a feature-rich citizen portal, full GIS integration, and rich mobile capabilities.

The Civic Application for Environmental Health includes process automation for the wide range of activities environmental health departments often oversee, including inspecting and permitting restaurants, septic systems, childcare facilities, swimming pools and more. The Civic Application for Environmental Health was built upon Accela’s deep experience in deploying environmental health solutions for very large, mid-size, and small health departments across the country.

In November 2018, Accela launched Accela Civic Platform V10 to improve overall user experience and enhance performance. The Civic Platform is at the core of Accela’s offerings and provides rich functionality to automate and simplify the complex workflows associated with building communities, growing businesses and protecting citizens. Updated features include a streamlined user interface, advanced search capability, modernized GIS interface, and faster performance overall.

Accela has more than 2,000 government agencies as customers.

Accela unveiled multiple new Software-as-a-Solution (SaaS) government customers including: Anne Arundel, Maryland; Jurupa Valley, California; Santa Barbara, California; Pinellas County, Florida; West Port, Connecticut; and New Haven, Indiana. These localities join the accelerating ranks of state and local government agencies turning to software as a service model to better deliver citizen services.

Accela Market Opportunities, M&A and Geo Expansions

In November 2018, Accela opened its Dublin office and plans to double the company’s current Ireland workforce. With support by the Irish Government through IDA Ireland, Accela plans to onboard nearly 30 staff to grow its world-class research and development team focused on modernizing government technology solutions. The three-year R&D project will promote the long-term stability of Accela’s Dublin office while keeping a company-wide focus on continuous innovation and growth.

In September 2017, Berkshire Partners, a Boston-based investment firm, has completed the acquisition of Accela. Abry Partners, an existing shareholder, will remain an investor in the company.

Accela Risks and Challenges

Accela's near-term agenda is to articulate a coherent product strategy following a series of acquisitions that have tripled its installed base. Another challenge is to migrate its existing on-premise customers to the Cloud in order to prevent any revenue leakage.

Competitors are expected to drive a wedge between these on-premise customers and Accela by pitching them affordable and perhaps more flexible Cloud alternatives. Accela will need to start emphasizing more of its key differentiators in land management, licensing, case management, not to mention the stability and scalability of Accela Automation.

Accela Ecosystem, Partners, Resellers and SI

In September 2018, Accela partnered with Microsoft. This partnership, which was first reported on by Government Technology back in June, will see Microsoft’s Azure hosting many of Accela’s civic tech solutions, touching on a wide range of functionalities such as planning, building and business licensing, among others.

It has strategic partnerships with Adobe, EMC, Apple, Esri, Microsoft, Motion Computing, Oracle, Panasonic and Selectron Technologies.

Among its implementation partners are: 21 Tech, GCOM, GovMethods, IK Consulting, Kings Canyon Technology, Natoma Technologies, OA Solutions, Peak Technology Solutions, Razavi Application Developers, RedMark Technologies, TechGlobal, TP Systems, TruePoint Solutions and Woolpert.
