Aclara Software, a Hubbell company Recent Developments
In April 2021, Austin Utilities, select and will implement an end-to-end advanced metering infrastructure solution based on the Aclara RF network to serve its electric, gas and water customers. The new point-to-multipoint AMI network will replace a manual meter-reading system and will support 12,000 electric, 9,500 water, and 11,000 gas meters for the combination utility. The utility selected the Aclara network because it could manage all three types of meters and offered the lowest total cost of ownership over the life of the system. The network’s ability to interface with water and gas meters from multiple manufacturers was key to Austin Utilities’ decision to implement the Aclara RF network. It offers flexibility to choose the meters that fit best for various residential and commercial applications. For its electric services, Austin Utilities will deploy Aclara’s kV2c commercial and its family of I210 residential meters. Data collected by the AMI network will be managed and analyzed via the AclaraONE software platform, allowing the city to have a single repository for data from all meters. Another factor that figured into Austin Utilities’ decision was the ease with which the Aclara system integrates with third-party software programs, such as the billing and customer care application from NISC, which the utility uses.

Aclara Software, a Hubbell company Market Opportunities, M&A and Geo Expansions
In June 2021, Aclara has extended its partnership with Meter Asset Provider SMS Plc, entering into a new agreement to deliver one million smart meters in the United Kingdom. The volume commitment will see SMS continue to install Aclara devices for its energy supplier clients as part of the government-mandated smart meter rollout. The Glasgow-headquartered Group has so far installed more than 1.5 million domestic smart meters and is currently contracted to deliver a further 2.5 million smart meters to UK consumers through its commercial energy supplier agreements.
At the beginning of 2020, Aclara unveiled its New Partner Ecosystem for Distribution Automation that brings together field devices, communications networks and software. With the growing adoption of distributed energy resources (DERs), microgrids, and electric vehicles (EVs), the electric distribution network is now a bi-directional, dynamic system that requires real-time control and optimization. In this environment, DA is becoming increasingly important for utilities to capture new growth opportunities and meet their customers’ evolving needs. The Aclara DA partner ecosystem includes companies with expertise in utility field devices, communications, and software-based control and coordination. These include:
Automation and control providers: Beckwith Electric Co. Inc., Largo, Fla., and Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories, Pullman, Wash., which offer controllers that enable Hubbell/Aclara devices to function either on or off communications networks. When operating on a network, such as the Aclara RF electric network, these controllers centralize communications to SCADA, distribution management and other systems through the communications network.
Software providers: OSI (Open Systems International Inc.), Medina, Minn.; Survalent, Brampton, Ontario, Canada; and Minsait ACS, Atlanta, Georgia, which create software that facilitates the control of electrical distribution systems – from basic SCADA to model-based advanced distribution management systems – by monitoring and measuring grid conditions as well as communicating with field devices. The Aclara RF communications network provides a resilient and reliable pathway between software solutions and the field devices on the electrical grid.
