Amazon Web Services (AWS) Strengths, Domain Expertise, and Key Differentiators
AWS offers more than 165 fully featured services for computing, storage, databases, networking, analytics, robotics, machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), mobile, security, hybrid, virtual, and augmented reality (VR and AR), media, and application development, deployment, and management.
In January 2019, Amazon launched Amazon WorkLink, a fully managed service that enables companies to provide their workforce with secure one-click access to internal websites and web applications from their mobile devices without connecting to VPNs or using custom browsers. End-users simply download the Amazon WorkLink app to enable access to internal content through existing browsers on their mobile devices.
The same period Amazon launched AWS Backup, a fully-managed, centralized backup service that makes it faster and simpler for customers to back up their data across AWS services and on-premises, helping customers more easily meet their business and regulatory backup compliance requirements. AWS Backup makes protecting storage volumes, databases, and file systems easier by giving customers a single service to configure and audit the AWS resources they backup, automate backup scheduling, set retention policies, and monitor recent backups and restores in one place.
Amazon Web Services (AWS) Recent Developments
In August 2020 Amazon Web Services introduced the General Availability of Bottlerocket, a new open-source Linux-based Operating System (OS) purpose-built to run containers. Bottlerocket includes only the software needed to run containers and comes with a transactional update mechanism. These properties enable customers to use container orchestrators to manage OS updates with minimal disruptions, enabling improved security and lower operational costs for containerized applications. AWS-provided Bottlerocket images are available for Amazon EKS (GA) and Amazon ECS (Preview). Bottlerocket is developed as an open-source project on GitHub.
It comes with Security-Enhanced Linux (SELinux) in enforcing mode for additional isolation and uses Device Mapper’s verity target (dm-verity), a Linux kernel feature which helps prevent rootkit-based attacks. In addition to these security enhancements, updates to Bottlerocket are applied and rolled back in an atomic manner to further simplify update management.
In January 2019, Amazon Web Services presented the availability of Amazon WorkLink, a fully managed service that enables companies to provide their workforce with secure one-click access to internal websites and web applications from their mobile devices without connecting to VPNs or using custom browsers.
Amazon Web Services (AWS) Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) Activities
In January 2019, Amazon Web Services acquired TSO Logic, which develops analytics tools to help customers and partners optimize their cloud migrations and AWS workloads. TSO Logic’s tools provide a “data-driven analysis of the total cost of ownership and cost modeling for your ideal future state.”

Amazon Web Services (AWS) Market Opportunities, M&A and Geo Expansions
In February 2020 Amazon Web Services launched the new Amazon Workspaces client for Mac and Windows. The client contains new enhancements including the ability to create personalized labels for registration codes, a new more intuitive UI, and includes the latest updates to the PCoIP protocol.
Personalized labels for registration codes enables end-users to create custom names for their various WorkSpace directories. These new personalized labels will be visible next to the registration codes, making it easier for end-users with multiple registration codes to differentiate between their WorkSpaces. The new UI updates the WorkSpaces client with a more modern look and feel that includes enhancements to WorkSpaces’ co-branding features, such as HTML support. Finally, this release includes the latest PCoIP protocol updates, enabling an even better user experience.
In January 2019, Amazon Web Services unveiled AWS Backup, a fully-managed, centralized backup service that makes it faster and simpler for customers to back up their data across AWS services and on-premises, helping customers more easily meet their business and regulatory backup compliance requirements. AWS Backup makes protecting storage volumes, databases, and file systems easier by giving customers a single service to configure and audit the AWS resources they backup, automate backup scheduling, set retention policies, and monitor recent backups and restores in one place.
During 2018 AWS expanded its presence in Nordic by opening the AWS Europe (Stockholm) Region, AWS fifth European Region, joining Dublin, Frankfurt, London, and Paris. With this launch, AWS now provides 60 Availability Zones, with another 12 zones and four Regions expected to come online by 2020 in Bahrain, Cape Town, Hong Kong, and Milan.
Organizations across the Nordics are moving their mission-critical workloads to the AWS Cloud to drive cost savings, accelerate innovation, and speed time-to-market, including enterprise customers like Aktia Bank, Ambita, Arriva, ASSA ABLOY, Bonnier, Basware, Cargotec, Den Norske Bank, F-Secure, Finnair, Fortum, Gelato, Husqvarna, Icelandair, IKEA, Modern Times Group, Nokia, Scania, Schibsted, SOK, Stockmann Oyj, Telenor Connexion, Telia, Tine SA, TopDanmark, Unibet, Visma, Volvo Group Connected Solutions, VR (Finnish Rail), WirelessCar, Wärtsilä, and XXL.
Additionally, AWS is also enabling some of the Nordics' most successful startups and gaming companies, such as Bambora, Evolution Gaming, Hemnet, iZettle, KRY, LEO Innovation Lab, Lingit, Lunar Way, Mapillary, Mathem, Mojang, Paradox Interactive, Quinyx, Rovio, Supercell, Tidal, Trustpilot, Tink, and Vivino.
Amazon Web Services (AWS) Risks and Challenges
The question is whether AWS can muster enough tailwind by adding another three to four billion dollars in the first quarter of 2019 to close in on Microsoft’s stated goal. It may not mean much to customers on which vendor becomes the first Cloud Computing vendor to reach the $30-billion milestone. For Microsoft, it would be a major vindication of its Cloud-first strategy.
Microsoft’s coming back from behind after trailing AWS for much of the past decade suggests that the Azure surge, coupled with increased adoptions of Office 365 and Dynamics 365 as well as the big bet on LinkedIn, could be putting the vendor in the driver’s seat once again when so much has been written about its misadventures in the smartphone market by buying and eventually selling off the phone business of Nokia in its failed attempts to challenge Apple and Google.
Amazon Web Services (AWS) Ecosystem, Partners, Resellers and SI
