AWS offers more than 165 fully featured services for computing, storage, databases, networking, analytics, robotics, machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), mobile, security, hybrid, virtual, and augmented reality (VR and AR), media, and application development, deployment, and management.
At its recent re:Invent conference, AWS beefed up its machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) offerings including AI for Data Analytics (AIDA) for predictive analytics capabilities in workspaces. SageMaker also received a boost with the new capability that automates load testing and optimizes model performance across machine learning (ML) instances.
In January 2019, Amazon launched Amazon WorkLink, a fully managed service that enables companies to provide their workforce with secure one-click access to internal websites and web applications from their mobile devices without connecting to VPNs or using custom browsers. End-users simply download the Amazon WorkLink app to enable access to internal content through existing browsers on their mobile devices.
The same period Amazon launched AWS Backup, a fully-managed, centralized backup service that makes it faster and simpler for customers to back up their data across AWS services and on-premises, helping customers more easily meet their business and regulatory backup compliance requirements. AWS Backup makes protecting storage volumes, databases, and file systems easier by giving customers a single service to configure and audit the AWS resources they backup, automate backup scheduling, set retention policies, and monitor recent backups and restores in one place.
Amazon Web Services (AWS) Recent Developments
In 3Q21, AWS remained the cash cow of the company, contributing all of its operating income of $4.9 billion, meaning Amazon would have posted a steep loss without AWS. For the three quarters ended September 30, AWS represented 62% of the company's operating income.
In the apps space, AWS announced three new capabilities for Amazon Connect, its Cloud-based cloud contact center solution. The new features give agents the right information at the right time to provide fast and secure caller authentication, the ability to answer customer questions more quickly, and the ability to make the overall process easier and more efficient. Tens of thousands of AWS customers are supporting more than 10 million contact center interactions a day on Amazon Connect.
In September 2021, AWS announced opening an infrastructure region in New Zealand in 2024. The new AWS Asia Pacific (Auckland) Region will consist of three Availability Zones (AZs) and join the existing 81 Availability Zones across 25 geographic AWS Regions at launch. The Region will be owned and operated by a local AWS entity in New Zealand. Globally, AWS has announced plans for 24 more Availability Zones and eight more AWS Regions in Australia, India, Indonesia, Israel, Spain, Switzerland, the United Arab Emirates, and the new AWS Region in New Zealand. The new AWS Asia Pacific (Auckland) Region will enable even more developers, startups, and enterprises as well as government, education, and nonprofit organizations to run their applications and serve end-users from data centers located in New Zealand, ensuring that customers who want to keep their data in New Zealand are able to do so.

In November 2021, Amazon Web Services, Inc. (AWS), an Amazon.com, Inc. company (NASDAQ: AMZN), announced four initiatives to empower learners and make it even easier for anyone with a desire to learn to access free cloud computing skills training and unlock new career possibilities in the cloud. The initiatives include the launch of AWS Skill Builder—a new digital learning experience, the addition of AWS courses to the Amazon.com website, the expansion of the AWS re/Start global reskilling program, and the opening of the AWS Skills Center—Amazon’s first dedicated, in-person cloud learning space.a
In December 2020, Amazon committed to investing hundreds of millions of dollars to provide free cloud computing skills training to 29 million people by 2025—reaching people from all walks of life and all levels of knowledge, in more than 200 countries and territories. On this mission, Amazon has already helped over 6 million people gain cloud skills, and the latest efforts build on the existing commitment by putting skills training into the hands of millions of people.
In February 2020 Amazon Web Services launched the new Amazon Workspaces client for Mac and Windows. The client contains new enhancements including the ability to create personalized labels for registration codes, a new more intuitive UI, and includes the latest updates to the PCoIP protocol.
Personalized labels for registration codes enables end-users to create custom names for their various WorkSpace directories. These new personalized labels will be visible next to the registration codes, making it easier for end-users with multiple registration codes to differentiate between their WorkSpaces. The new UI updates the WorkSpaces client with a more modern look and feel that includes enhancements to WorkSpaces’ co-branding features, such as HTML support. Finally, this release includes the latest PCoIP protocol updates, enabling an even better user experience.

With this launch, AWS now provides 60 Availability Zones, with another 12 zones and four Regions expected to come online by 2020 in Bahrain, Cape Town, Hong Kong, and Milan.

Amazon Web Services (AWS) Risks and Challenges
Over the next few years, AWS’ outsized influence in the IaaS market is not likely to wane given the depth and breadth of its infrastructure, platform and more recently enterprise applications offerings like Amazon Workspace and Connect. Nevertheless, AWS is evolving. First, Andy Jassy, long-time CEO of AWS, has been replaced by Adam Selipsky of Tableau, after the former was tapped to become the new CEO of Amazon as founder Jeff Bezos stepped down in 2021. That alone would result in personnel changes at AWS even though Selipsky used to be a key executive at AWS until 2016 when he left to run Tableau. In November 2021, Doug Yeum, AWS channel chief, announced his plan to join his old boss Jassy to help run the retail mothership. Sandy Carter, who helped expand AWS public sector partner program for two years, is set to leave the company. Meanwhile, Selipsky will have to find new ways to sustain its growth against a competitive landscape different from what he last saw it five years earlier.
Second, the rise of eCommerce to become an essential tool for many buoyed competitors like Shopify, which at one point was a customer of AWS and decided to switch to Google in 2018. Other retailers continue to resist using AWS. Minimizing any large-scale attrition will be a top priority for AWS.
Third, AWS has enjoyed a wide berth as the preferred IaaS vendor among at least 50% of the 2,000 largest companies around the world, according to our Buyer Insight Master Database. But many of these customers are also running Azure or other IaaS provider as they pursue a multi-cloud strategy in order to mitigate risks. After seizing an early lead in IaaS, AWS will face a daunting task to prevail at the end.
Then there is the cash cow status of AWS, which provides the bulk of Amazon's operating income. One key aspect behind that level of contribution is AWS' ability to extract fees from its customers. Bandwidth tranfer fees, for example, have become the bone of contention among ISVs, partners and their clients, not to mention the wraths that its competitors are fostering to drive a wedge between AWS and its customers. For example, Cloudflare and its Bandwidth Alliance are signing up partners like Oracle to help curb unnecessary data transfer fees levied by providers like AWS, who assidiously defends its practices as a way to ensure high-performance Cloud infrastructure services that it delivers. Whether AWS will make changes to its fee structure could have significant ramifications on its business model.
Amazon Web Services (AWS) Ecosystem, Partners, Resellers and SI
AWS has more than 100,000 partners including systems integrators, resellers and consultants. In 2021, AWS overhauled its partner program to replace the technology and consulting partner type models and instead focus on what partners offer. Under the new plan that is scheduled to go live in early 2022, the five paths that partners can enroll in cover software, hardware, services, training and distribution. Partners can enroll in multiple paths.
The AWS Partner Network is focused on helping APN Partners build successful AWS-based businesses or solutions by providing business, technical, marketing, and go-to-market support.
