The “Alpaca Forecast AI Prediction Matrix” is an application (app) that provides short-term market price forecasts for major markets such as USD/JPY, EUR/USD, AUD/JPY, CME Nikkei 225 Futures Index and US 10-year treasury bonds, using Bloomberg’s Market Data Feed (B-PIPE).
Developed jointly with AlpacaJapan, a startup that specializes in AI solutions for financial trading, the app uses a cutting-edge deep learning engine to analyze tick data at a speed and volume beyond the ability of the human eye. AlpacaJapan’s AI technology recognizes patterns in the waves of price movements instantly, making market predictions possible. The Alpaca Forecast AI Prediction Matrix is available on the Bloomberg App Portal, a function on the Bloomberg Terminal that offers subscribers access to a range of specialty applications across asset classes. The Bloomberg App Portal is powered by Bloomberg data and news, with apps developed by software companies, financial institutions, academics, and other third parties.

Institutional clients can also use the Bloomberg App Portal to deploy proprietary software tools to their own employees and clients.

Bloomberg has more than 400,000 Bloomberg Terminal customers. Over 90% of the Fortune 500 are Bloomberg customers. Users include corporate finance and treasury groups, buy-side institutions, hedge funds, and proprietary trading desks who conduct cash and risk management activities on a regular basis as part of their trade execution business process.
Bloomberg Market Opportunities, M&A and Geo Expansions
Since the financial crisis, Bloomberg has invested heavily in new technologies with the goal of boosting the value of its Financial Products division, which is responsible for the Bloomberg Terminal business.
Over the past several years, Bloomberg has embarked on aggressive product development in order to make available enhanced services from trading to analytics and from straight-through processing to investment decision support, rendering the use of competing for single-purpose and best-of-breed applications obsolete. The recent addition of a robust hedge accounting tool, confirmation and matching for FX, and money market fund trading have enabled Bloomberg to deepen its relationships with corporate treasury groups.
In October 2018 Harvest Fund and Bloomberg jointly partnered to accelerate the fund manager’s global expansion plans. By relying on Bloomberg’s financial information and technology innovation, Harvest Fund will enhance its investment research capabilities and advance its data-driven asset management business.
Founded in 1999, Harvest Fund is one of China’s first asset management companies, managing CNY950 billion in assets as of year-end 2017. To support the firm’s path of international expansion, Harvest Fund sought to partner with a solution provider that could scale to meet future demands across the investment lifecycle as Harvest Fund grows its global ecosystem. They chose to expand their relationship with Bloomberg, having worked together for more than a decade on portfolio management, risk control, compliance, workflow optimization, and more.
To support its international business development initiatives, Harvest Fund will use Bloomberg’s global real-time and reference data sets, including economics, fund, equity, bond, and corporate fundamentals. Harvest Fund will also employ Bloomberg’s comprehensive suite of multi-asset analytical tools and seamless trading technologies to strengthen its equity and bond investment research capabilities, as well as work with Bloomberg on order management, research management, data integration and distribution, and indices.
Bloomberg Risks and Challenges
Bloomberg Professional service, remains a proprietary technology solution, which is seeing increased competition from an array of financial information, Big Data analytics, Cloud applications as well as social media tools, not to mention its chief rival Thomson Reuters, which for years has been seeking to replace Bloomberg terminal with its own information services.
Its Cloud strategy is also a mixed blessing given its direct connection to customers through its terminal business whereas it continues to enjoy unimpeded access to these users. Some of these financial institutions have invested in the development of messaging and collaboration microservices over private or public Cloud in order to rein in rising costs of maintaining their terminals.
Going forward, a significant portion of Bloomberg’s growth in the TRM space will depend on displacing existing, well-known competitors in the market spaces they have traditionally owned. In addition, Bloomberg has to step up mobile development in order to stay relevant with a new generation of traders and financial professionals who are more comfortable with tools like Twitter for chats and microblogs, functions that are not too different from the chat service on the Bloomberg terminal. Despite the outsize influence of the Bloomberg terminal business, its recent performance has decelerated as a wave of cloud solutions for trading and regulatory solutions have started to erode its entrenched presence among financial institutions.
