Granicus Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) Activities

In 2021, following the investment from Harvest Partners and Vista in Q1 2021, Granicus acquired Bang the Table and OpenCities in Q2, and GovQA in Q3 2021. Bang the Table and OpenCities are two high-growth startups, govtech innovators. Bang the Table is the company behind market-leading community engagement solution EngagementHQ, and OpenCities, the public sector’s leading digital customer journey platform that helps local governments transform their websites, digital forms, and service delivery experiences. GovQA is an important provider of public records and compliance workflow solutions for the government. The move will give Granicus a variety of tools for collecting public sentiment — polling and surveys, website analytics, etc. — as well as tools to understand that data and personalize user experiences.

In March 2018, Granicus acquiried Accela's Legislative Management business. Legislative Management arm, one of Accela's nine business units, is dedicated to helping governments streamline legislative meetings, from document creation to video presentation, and other aspects, according to Accela's site. In 2016, the two large cloud-based companies in the government technology market, GovDelivery and Granicus, have merged into a single firm. The deal, brought about through the private equity firm Vista Equity Partners, is a major one for the market — the companies each serve more than 1,000 government entities at the federal, state and local levels in the U.S.

Granicus Market Opportunities, M&A and Geo Expansions

In December 2020, Harvest Partners (“Harvest”) had joined as an investor alongside Vista Equity Partners (“Vista”) and K1 Investment Management (“K1”) in a recapitalization of Granicus, the provider of cloud-based citizen engagement technologies and services, supporting them in their continued growth and market performance. To fund the acquisition, Harvest provided equity capital and arranged debt financing. In addition, Harvest arranged equity co-investment capital. The continuous attraction of investment by Granicus signals likely competitive advantages in the future.

In April 2020, Granicus launched a new set of easily embeddable web tools that aggregate, curate and present COVID-19 content from trusted government sources for widespread community access. These FedRAMP authorized tools are free for a limited time and are available to any local, state or federal government organization to use on their website for COVID-19 related communications.

During the outbreak, the company is also helping agencies create tools to search for government news. This includes working with individual school districts to provide families with updated information.

The company entered new global markets as a result of major customer wins driven by growing enterprise adoption of GR8 People's talent platform. Following strong expansion in its business and another record year, GR8 People increased headcount by 40% and continues to add new key roles to propel growth into 2019 and beyond.

Granicus Risks and Challenges

Granicus provides solutions for government agencies. There are only 1,600 government agencies in the U.S. of any demonstrable size, which means the enterprise will have to gain and retain a noticeable market share to hit significant revenue. It's a limiting factor for Granicus and its exclusive focus on the government sector.

Granicus Ecosystem, Partners, Resellers and SI

Granicus has established itself as a reliable software provider through its innovative, high functionality offerings and has a large and growing base of existing and signed government customers throughout the United States. The company's sales percentage mainly comes from sales in the US and a portion from Canada, UK, Australia and New Zealand. Besides the offices in the USA, they have an office in the UK in Crawley, in Australia in Melbourne, in India in Bangalore, and in Canada in Ottawa.
