ION Group Strengths, Domain Expertise, and Key Differentiators

In February 2020, ION, announced the launch of the industry’s first-ever cash forecasting solution powered by machine learning. Machine learning has the potential to revolutionize the treasury industry by providing vital strategic insights on an organization’s cash management and forecasting. Cash forecasting is only one aspect of the machine learning program at ION. Solutions currently in development will dramatically reduce the implementation costs and time-to-market of a treasury management system (TMS) and increase accuracy and performance in other important areas.

ION offers its seven unique treasury and risk management (TRM) solutions, from core to enterprise including IT2, City Financials, ITS, OpenLink, Reval, Treasura and Wallstreet Suite to 1,100 clients in hundreds of countries.

ION Commodities accelerates the success of 1,200 energy and commodities clients with a data driven approach and powerful, energy and commodities (ETRM and CTRM) trading and risk management solutions including Allegro, Aspect, OpenLink, RightAngle and TriplePoint.

ION Analytics (Acuris, Dealogic, and Selerity) helps companies find advantage in a world of information overload and fragmented systems.

ION Group Recent Developments

In November 2021, ION Treasury launched TreasuraSpark, a simple to use cash management SaaS solution, to help high-growth organizations migrate from outdated spreadsheets to automated cash management. ION’s TreasuraSpark provides a real-time view of an organization’s available and expected cash balances. By automating the collection and reconciliation of cash movements, companies gain confidence that they have a sufficient level of cash to cover daily needs. This visibility leads to cost reductions including the opportunity cost associated with excess cash, cost related to overdraft facilities, and time saved by removing manual processes and fixing errors. TreasuraSpark delivers automation and controls to companies who require more frequent updates to cash activity and balances but find the experience of creating their cash view cumbersome.

In April 2019, ION acquired Allegro Development Corporation, a global provider of enterprise commodity management solutions. The acquisition of Allegro Development Corporation expands its footprint in commodities and its portfolio of enterprise solutions.

ION Group Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) Activities

In September 2021, ION Markets acquired Clarus Financial Technology (‘Clarus’), a provider of SaaS analytics, data, and research for global derivatives markets. As part of ION Markets, Clarus will offer its SaaS analytics products for real-time margin and risk management of both cleared and uncleared OTC derivatives. These will broaden ION’s XTP offering and complement ION’s JANUS pricing and valuation expertise with Initial Margin for OTC derivatives, as well as delivering new portfolio risk management analytics. Clarus’ functionality also enables firms to comply with the new Uncleared Margin Rules (UMR) regulation for OTC derivatives.

In June 2021, ION has acquired DASH Financial Technologies. The acquisition from DASH’s previous owner, Flexpoint Ford, has closed following regulatory approvals. DASH becomes part of the ION Markets division, which specialises in global trading automation, analytics and innovation across the trade lifecycle, powering key capital markets workflows for financial markets participants across all asset classes. The integration of DASH into the ION Markets portfolio is timely given the increased pace of trading activity and volatility in the options markets due to a number of factors including the ongoing pandemic, political uncertainty, and increased levels of both institutional and retail investor engagement.

In November 2019, Ion has extended an acquisition spree with a deal to buy currency software supplier MarketFactory. MarketFactory, which was founded in 2008 by two former ICAP employees, supplies tools that allows dealers and brokers to connect directly to dozens of separate marketplaces in the $6.6tn-a-day foreign exchange market. Over the last two decades Ion’s founder, former bond trader Andrea Pignataro, has established the group as a key supplier of technology that spans trade processing and risk management. Its aggressive acquisition strategy has in recent years seen it spend more than £3bn to take control of data provider Fidessa, news service Mergermarket and a majority stake in Dealogic.

In April 2018, ION acquired UK rival Fidessa in a deal worth £1.5bn, with the British trading technology group accepting a higher offer and switching its recommendation from a bid by Switzerland’s Temenos.

ION Group Market Opportunities, M&A and Geo Expansions

In August 2021, ION Markets extended the partnership between ION and UBS Bond Port, connecting the former’s LatentZero buyside clients to the latter’s Bond Port trading platform. Bond Port is now accessible to all Buyside clients through the LatentZero OMS, providing more trading flexibility and anonymous access to the huge liquidity pool it offers. Leveraging existing infrastructure, ION and UBS have expanded access to Bond Port’s anonymous Global Credit liquidity pool to LatentZero’s OMS clients. With connectivity to Bond Port, ION’s LatentZero clients can instantly access a large liquidity network of 2,500+ clients in over 65 markets with firm pricing in over 25,000 instruments, trading in 19 currencies. Client liquidity is seamlessly integrated with external venues, regional dealers, and alternative providers and users have access to a range of trading protocols and an aggregated view of the current market.

In March 2018, ION Investment Group acquired Openlink Financial, a global provider of trading and risk management solutions. Openlink provides complementary solutions that further expand ION’s footprint across energy companies, financial services institutions, and commodities-intensive corporates. Clients will benefit from ION’s additional scale and reach, with global capabilities that enhance Openlink’s existing offerings and expertise, and advance Openlink’s product and delivery excellence. Earlier, in 2016 ION Acquired Reval, a global provider of cloud-based solutions for treasury and risk management.

ION Group Risks and Challenges

ION remains a holding company showing little signs of creating a common technology framework for all of its software assets and that could prevent some of these products from migrating to the Cloud, let alone capitalizing on the economy of scale that Cloud Computing presents to the vendor and its customers. Ion’s appetite for acquisitions has raised concerns among some investors over the level of its debts.

ION Group Ecosystem, Partners, Resellers and SI

In October 2021, ION Commodities and Fidectus entered a strategic partnership. ION’s next generation energy trading and risk management (ETRM) solutions coupled with Fidectus’ Global Energy Network (GEN) now drive increased value from trade capture through confirmation, settlement, brokerage, and payment for both physical and financial commodities. Fidectus’ GEN seamlessly connects with ION’s trusted ETRM portfolio, including Openlink, Allegro, and TriplePoint, to automate end-to-end processes, reducing operational cost and risk for ION’s leading customer community. The innovative solution allows you to resolve disputes faster, mitigate your credit risk, and optimize your payments schedule.

Over the past few years, ION has been building out an ecosystem made up of fully-integrated third-party ISVs to provide the most widely-used treasury applications, out-of-the-box. This ecosystem is focused on providing clients an STP experience that integrates all elements of their treasury workflow into an integrated experience.

In July 2018, Aspect Enterprise Solutions, a division of ION, and SINGA Associates made a strategic partnership, further expanding Aspect’s ETRM and CTRM expertise and reach in global energy and metals trading markets.
