Meltwater Group Market Opportunities, M&A and Geo Expansions
In May 2020 Meltwater presented its May 2020 Product Release, detailing a range of solutions, workflows and new functionality in its flagship product. The release follows the success of the Fjord Product Release last October, and the release name is another nod to Meltwater’s Norwegian heritage. Meltwater has also launched a brand new website, which articulates everything that the company now offers, and how they help to bring Marketing, PR and Communications teams closer together, with an intuitive, all-in-one solution.
The May 2020 Product Release focuses on three main themes: capturing more content and conversations than anyone else, advancing analytics into insights, and prioritizing simplicity for users.
In April 2018, Meltwater acquired Sysomos, a leader in social analytics and engagement. The addition of Sysomos to Meltwater enables organizations to analyze social media, news and other human-generated content in one platform, furthering Meltwater’s mission to give businesses the insights from outside data, helping them stay ahead.
In August 2017, Meltwater acquired Algo, a real-time data analytics platform powered by the most advanced machine learning techniques available. The acquisition further strengthens Meltwater’s powerful media analytics and insights platform by bringing on Algo’s patented Velocity of Information engine, which surfaces rising trends from tens of millions of real-time data points. In February 2017, Meltwater closed a $60M debt funding round with Silicon Valley Bank, and Vector Capital in order to ramp up strategic acquisitions.
Meltwater Group Risks and Challenges
After withdrawing its bid to buy competitor Cision to expand in the traditional PR automation market, Meltwater appears to be going back to its drawing board by focusing on its core markets like the new media for corporate communications. Its decision not to purchase Vocus UK, which were spun off by Cision after heeding complaints from British antitrust agency, suggested that Meltwater would be going alone with its existing assets for the time being. What’s not clear is whether the new media could run out of room to grow for Meltwater.
Meltwater Group Ecosystem, Partners, Resellers and SI
Meltwater Group was founded in Oslo, Norway in 2001. Since that time, it has added offices in Europe, North America, Asia/Pacific, Australia, and Africa. Now headquartered in San Francisco, the 1600-person company primarily sells direct.
In October 2018, Meltwater partnered with Dow Jones, a global provider of news and business information, to provide premium licensed content from Dow Jones Factiva into the Meltwater Media Intelligence platform.
