In June 2020 PTC launched the latest version of its Windchill product lifecycle management (PLM) software. Windchill 12 offers new collaboration tools, capabilities to improve product quality, and enhanced deployment options that provide the tools necessary to adapt to today’s changing work environment.
Building on Windchill’s web-based user interface and highly configurable out-of-the-box applications, Windchill 12 enables companies to improve collaboration across the enterprise with even broader access to product data. In January 2021, PTC completed its acquisition of Arena Solutions, the industry's leading software as a service (SaaS) product lifecycle management (PLM) solution. The combination of Arena Solutions and Onshape, which PTC acquired in 2019, establishes PTC as the leading provider of pure SaaS solutions for the product development market and broadly extends PTC's presence in the attractive mid-market, where SaaS solutions are becoming the standard.
In November 2019 PTC acquired Onshape, developer of the Onshape Software as a Service (SaaS) product development platform that unites robust computer-aided design (CAD) software with powerful data management and collaboration tools. The Onshape team invested years of effort building a cutting-edge SaaS platform that could host a range of product development applications. Kepware’s KEPServerEX communications platform will become a strategic component of the PTC ThingWorx IoT technology platform.
PTC Risks and Challenges
A large amount of PTC sales are to customers in the discrete manufacturing sector. The global Manufacturing Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) declined significantly in the second and third quarters of 2020 due to the impact of COVID-19 and, though it has recovered somewhat, remained approximately at the 50% level in September 2020. Although the volatility in Manufacturing PMI did not have a significant adverse effect on PTC's business in FY’20, if the manufacturing sector does not improve or continues to decline, PTC customers in this sector may, as they have in the past, reduce or defer purchases of their products and services, which could adversely affect our financial results.
PTC appears to fare well against other enterprise applications vendors during the pandemic. The question is how PTC can sustain customer interest in the post-pandemic era as many of its customers are expected to reevaluate their product lifecycle management strategiesto better withstand supply chain shocks. Additionally any systematic purging of SKUs in order to stay agile and resilient in any future emergency situation could be paramount to their long-term survival and that may well be the lesson for PLM vendors like PTC.
PTC Ecosystem, Partners, Resellers and SI
In Q3’20, PTC expanded their strategic alliances with Microsoft and Rockwell Automation into a threeway alliance to take to market a new class of IIoT solutions called Factory Insights as a Service. Factory Insights as a Service is a turnkey cloud solution that enables manufacturers to achieve significant impact, speed, and scale with their digital transformation initiatives.
In June 2019, PTC formed a strategic alliance with Vodafone Business that builds on an existing three-year relationship and will enable customers across multiple industry segments to rapidly develop and deploy revenue-generating IoT and AR applications.
In June 2018, PTC entered into a definitive agreement with Rockwell, which made a $1 billion equity investment in PTC, and Rockwell Automation’s Chairman and CEO, Blake Moret, will join PTC’s board of directors.
