SITA Strengths, Domain Expertise, and Key Differentiators
SITA is the IT provider for the air transport industry, delivering solutions for airlines, airports, aircraft and governments. It's technology powers more seamless, safe and sustainable air travel. SITA’s subsidiaries and joint ventures include SITAONAIR, branded SITA FOR AIRCRAFT, CHAMP Cargosystems and Aviareto.
SITA Recent Developments
In May 2020 SITA has successfully deployed its Smart Path technology at airports to streamline the departure process through the use of a single biometric token, where a passenger’s face in their passport at each step of the journey across an individual airport – from check-in to boarding. However, the shift in focus in the next few years will see Smart Path integrated with self-sovereign identity, controlled by the individual and usable across governments, airports, and airlines, streamlining the travel process even further.
In September 2019, SITA has been selected to provide key systems to support the smooth opening and operation of Algeria"s new international terminal at Houari Boumediene International Airport. The new terminal, which opened to the public in April 2019, is among the first few airports in North Africa to use SITA's Airport Management Solution.
In July 2018, Brisbane Airport, the premier gateway to Queensland has selected SITA as its technology partner as the airport continues its growth and transformation plans. The new agreement will see SITA develop and extend the technology it provides for passenger, baggage and airport services to support Brisbane Airport's commitment to service. The five-year agreement continues the airport's close partnership with SITA which has successfully been in place for more than 20 years.
SITA Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) Activities
In November 2019 SITA acquired 100% of Software Design, an Italian software and solution integrator tailored to airports and the main IT service provider to Naples Airport.
Through this acquisition, SITA will strengthen its capacity to help airports in Italy and Europe seamlessly manage and integrate technology across numerous systems and providers. Software Design brings to SITA a strong team of experts with deep airport knowledge, as well as project management and system integration expertise. With more than 50% of revenue now derived from application-based solutions, SITA is experiencing a growing demand for its airport-specific integration capabilities.
SITA, through Software Design, will evolve the day-to-day management of all IT infrastructure and applications at Naples Airport. This will enable the airport to leverage SITA’s experience in passenger and baggage processing, border management, and airport operations to drive a major modernization of the airport’s IT and digital infrastructure. The airport, which is one of the fastest-growing airports in Italy, plans to step up its investment in technology to help meet the demands of that growth, with SITA leading its implementation.
SITA has acquired Software Design from the company’s managing shareholders and 2i Aeroporti S.p.A, a joint venture between F2i, the largest infrastructure fund operating in Italy, and Ardian, a world-leading private investment house. Together F2i and Ardian control one of Italy’s main airport networks that include Naples, Milan, Turin, Alghero, Bologna, and Trieste airports, serving more than 58 million passengers and 650,000 tons of freight every year.

SITA Risks and Challenges
Balancing the diverging and competing interests of its ownership group, which includes many airlines and Boeing, could be a daunting task as the airlines industry continues to consolidate with fewer players controlling more traffic and aiming to steer SITA to their favor. The Board of Directors of SITA announced that Barbara Dalibard has been appointed Chief Executive Officer of SITA, effective 1st July 2016. Ms. Dalibard will replace current CEO Francesco Violante who will step down in the second half of 2016 after more than 13 years at the helm, of which 10 years were as CEO of the SITA Group.
