Synopsys Strengths, Domain Expertise, and Key Differentiators
Synopsys is supplying the electronic design automation (EDA) software that engineers use to design and test integrated circuits, also known as chips. Synopsys also offers semiconductor intellectual property (IP) solutions, which are pre-designed, pre-verified hardware and software components that designers can integrate into a system-on-chip (SoC) for a wide range of applications, rather than designing those components themselves. To complement these offerings, which are sold primarily to semiconductor and electronics companies, they provide technical services to support their solutions and help their customers develop chips and electronic systems.
Synopsys Recent Developments
In September 2020, Synopsys launched OptoCompiler solution for photonic integrated circuit (PIC) design, layout implementation and verification. By providing schematic-driven layout and advanced photonic layout synthesis in a single platform, OptoCompiler bridges the gap between photonic experts and IC designers to make photonic design accessible, fast, and flexible.
In October 2019, Synopsys launched a comprehensive unified functional safety verification solution to accelerate time to ISO 26262 certification for automotive IP and semiconductor companies targeting the highest Automotive Safety Integrity Levels (ASIL D). As part of the solution, Synopsys introduced VC Functional Safety Manager, a FMEA/FMEDA and fault classification automation technology enabling architects, IP designers, and verification engineers to accelerate their functional safety verification with productivity gains up to 50 percent compared to traditional manual and error-prone functional safety verification point tools.
In September 2019 Synopsys released its LucidShape software for the design, simulation, and analysis of automotive exterior lighting products. LucidShape version 2019.09 gives designers new tools to create sophisticated freeform reflectors and dynamic pixel light headlamps, as well as enhanced tools for visualization.
In 2018, Synopsys partnered with Google Cloud to provide a full end-to-end solution to perform functional verification workloads in the cloud. An increasing number of users are seeking solutions that take advantage of the elastic hardware scalability offered in the cloud to address peak/burst simulation capacity requirements, enabling a higher quality verification on a predictable schedule. This collaboration provides a proven and scalable solution to enable Synopsys VCS simulation workloads on Google Cloud.
Synopsys Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) Activities
In Jnauary 2020, Synopsys acquired Tinfoil Security, a provider of dynamic application security testing (DAST) and application programming interface (API) testing. This acquisition tightly aligns with the vision Synopsys began with when established the Software Integrity Group over five years ago.
In August 2019, Synopsys acquired QTronic GmbH, a leader in simulation, test tools, and services for automotive software and systems development headquartered in Germany. When completed, the acquisition will broaden Synopsys' product portfolio of automotive solutions serving the needs of automotive Tier 1 and OEM companies and add a team of highly experienced engineers to accelerate technology development and customer deployment.
In February 2018, Synopsys acquired PhoeniX B.V., headquartered in Enschede, the Netherlands, a global supplier of photonic chip design solutions. With the acquisition, Synopsys is the leading provider of photonic integrated circuit design automation solutions for a wide range of application requirements ranging from data communications to sensors and biomedical devices.

Synopsys EDA and IP customers are primarily semiconductor and electronics systems companies. The customers for its software integrity products include many of these companies as well as companies in a wider array of industries, including financial services, energy, and industrials. Some of Synopsys customers include: Eagle Investment, Direct Edge, PointClickCare, OpenText, Entersekt, Copperleaf, Ontario Systems, Science Logic, Olympus, Medical Technology, Spirent, and many more.
Synopsys Market Opportunities, M&A and Geo Expansions
In September 2019, Infineon Technologies AG and Synopsys has partnered together to support AI-driven solutions with future automotive microcontrollers. Next-generation AURIX microcontrollers from Infineon will integrate a new high-performance AI accelerator called Parallel Processing Unit (PPU) that will employ Synopsys' DesignWare ARC EV Processor IP. AI and neural networks are fundamental building blocks for future automated driving applications, such as object classification, target tracking, or path planning.
Furthermore, they play an important role in optimizing many other automotive applications, helping to reduce the cost of ECU systems, improving their performance, and accelerating time-to-market. For example, they enable an optimized engine auto-calibration and reduce the number of sensors by producing accurate mathematical models of the physical reactions occurring in a system. At the same time, however, AI applications require much higher computing power than standard algorithms.
Acquisitions are an important part of its growth strategy. Synopsys has completed a significant number of acquisitions in recent years and expects to make additional acquisitions in the future
Synopsys Risks and Challenges
Chip industry is undergoing major transformation as key players like Intel are aiming to reinvent themselves by focusing on Cloud infrastructure and new data center development efforts. Synopsys may have to adapt to disruptive forces from IoT to rise of huge contract manufacturers like HonHai.
Synopsys Ecosystem, Partners, Resellers and SI
Synopsys market their products and services principally through direct sales in the United States and principal foreign markets. Typically distribute its software products and documentation to customers electronically, but provide physical media (e.g., DVD-ROMs) when requested by the customer. Synopsys has long-established proven strategic alliances with the leading foundry, FPGA and IP suppliers that are dedicated to jointly solving the challenges of system complexity and nanometer-scale for leading-edge SoC design.
Synopsys has established partnerships with Red Hat, Pivotal, Docker, Accenture, Cognizant, Capgemini, AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, and others.
