Itron Inc. Recent Developments
In February 2024, Itron unveiled its Itron Enterprise Edition (IEE) Cloud, a cloud-based meter data management (MDM) platform tailored for electric utilities. Available on Microsoft Azure and other cloud platforms, IEE Cloud reduces total cost of ownership and IT complexity for utilities while offering enhanced operational visibility and flexibility in business processes. It enables utilities to seamlessly integrate new capabilities like revenue assurance and transformer load management, fostering agility and accessibility through its cloud-exclusive architecture.
In November 2021, Itron launched Itron Smart Pay for utilities and cities in North America. Building on Itron’s global leadership in prepayment solutions, with 20 million prepay endpoints in over 20 countries, Itron Smart Pay is Itron’s first Software as a Service (SaaS) delivery program model in North America. The solution is designed for utilities to empower their customers to manage and pay for their energy consumption by providing flexible billing and payment solutions.
In March 2020 Itron launched its Cyble 5 communications module for utilities and cities in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA). Building on Itron’s proven Cyble technology, with nearly 10 million devices in the field, this next generation of Cyble modules enables utilities to take advantage of extended connectivity options to further advance data collection and billing efficiency.
The Cyble 5 communications module, which transforms gas and water mechanical meters into connected data points, enables utilities to take advantage of drive-by Automated Meter Reading (AMR) and IoT data collection (LoRaWan/Sigfox). This new generation features out-of-the-box extended communication alternatives to help accelerate data collection, notably through fast drive-by capabilities, while also offering fixed network connectivity to LoRaWAN and Sigfox networks. Designed with customer feedback, Cyble 5 includes richer data sets helping meet their operational requirements, better understand resources use and improve customer relationships.
In the BYOT model, customers who have purchased a Wi-Fi smart thermostat are recruited to participate in demand response programs. This is in contrast to the direct install model for demand response, where a utility-owned device would be installed in the customer home.
In July 2019, Itron launched Itron Eyva, an integrated portfolio of results-driven offerings to achieve a broad set of desirable outcomes for electricity, gas and water utilities, and smart cities. Itron Eyva provides actionable insights into three major focus areas, leveraging the power of untapped and siloed data for utility and city customers: Information management, Operations management, and Consumer energy management.
In June 2018, Itron launched its Hands-free BYOT solution to enable public power utilities to implement Bring-Your-Own-Thermostat (BYOT) demand response programs at a lower cost and with minimal impact on operations.

Itron Inc. Risks and Challenges
Revenues decreased by $206.4 million in 2022, or 32%, compared with 2021. The decrease was mainly due to the sale of certain Gas product lines from our manufacturing and business operations in Europe and North America to Dresser during the first quarter of 2022, accounting for $82.0 million of the decline. The decrease was also due to the discontinuation of some legacy products and component shortages resulting in unfulfilled customer demand. Changes in foreign currency exchange rates unfavorably impacted revenues by $55.4 million.
In 2021, revenues were $2.2 billion compared with $2.5 billion last year, a decrease of $329.1 million, or 13%.
As utilities are struggling with the rise of energy alternatives, their pressures to reduce costs will increase and Itron could either profit from such disruptive forces or squeeze in the middle.
Itron Inc. Ecosystem, Partners, Resellers and SI
