Aspen Technology Risks and Challenges
Since 2010 AspenTech has been on an upswing benefiting from its decision to standardize blanket software subscription agreements with its customers. In 2012 AspenTech upped the ante by introducing premium support offerings that include 24x7 support, faster response times, dedicated technical advocates, and access to web-based training modules. The results have been a steady increase in its recurring revenues as well as long-term contract value, which reflects customer renewal value.
Under its current selling plan, AspenTech gives customers the flexibility of accessing to all of the products within the aspenONE suite they license, thus potentially boosting adoption rates of its vast portfolio of manufacturing and supply chain and operations management applications and making greater inroads into these enterprises.
For its latest quarter, subscription revenues jumped 28% and its long term contract value topped $1,8 billion at the end of 2012, up 3% three months earlier. Still, the fundamentals of AspenTech applications remain unchanged and Cloud-based AspenTech is not part of the vendor’s lexicon and probably it will not be the case for years to come because of security concerns of its customers. Despite these limitations, AspenTech has revived its competitiveness after a hard fall in the mid-2000s. The challenge is whether it can use its newfound power to steer customers to greater utilization of its products.
Aspen Technology Ecosystem, Partners, Resellers and SI
In June 2020 Hargrove and Aspen Technology have partnered to deliver engineering services for a “Digital Twin” to better manage the operations and maintenance phase of a plant’s lifecycle. Hargrove will provide digital twin services that will rely on key technology and domain expertise from Aspen Technology. The digital twin represents a virtualized copy of the historical, current, and future behavior of the physical plant asset and the physical and chemical processes occurring within that plant. Customers can realize increased throughput and quality, lower operating costs, and increased equipment uptime.
In October 2018, Aspen Technology partnered with China National Bluestar (Group) to broaden the deployment of AspenTech’s Aspen Plus software for process simulation and Aspen DMCplus software for advanced process control company-wide. The deployment will enable Bluestar to achieve operational excellence through optimization across the asset lifecycle.
