Autodesk Strengths, Domain Expertise, and Key Differentiators

Autodesk remains the engineering application vendor for a wide range of functions covering professional design, drafting, detailing, and visualization in construction, manufacturing, civil engineering, and process plant design fields. Autodesk's strategy is to lead its customers and the industries they serve to the new cloud and mobile platforms.

The Autodesk suite is the ideal choice for aerospace companies willing to move their manufacturing plants towards a smart-factory setup. The whole software suite is integrated with the Internet of Things via Autodesk’s Fusion Production software, which collects real-time data from various nodes throughout factory floors, identifies errors, updates its cloud-based database, and gives quick access to information to users.

Currently, Autodesk has 4,000 desktop developers, and they hope to draw many of them into the cloud in addition to attracting new ones. The initiative also includes a partner program, which invites companies to work with Autodesk to create intuitive services for manufacturers through the cloud.

So far, BriteHub, Proto Labs, FATHOM, 100kGarages, MakeTime, and HWTrek have signed on as partners.

Autodesk joined forces with Google Cloud Platform, developer of Google Cloud Platform ZYNC Render, integrated cloud-based storage, and rendering solution for the VFX industry.

Autodesk Recent Developments

In May 2020 Autodesk released BIM 360 Assets module within Autodesk Construction Cloud. The BIM 360 Assets module enables construction teams to track and manage project assets through the entire building lifecycle – from design through handover – from one centralized location. The new module also gives construction teams increased access to asset data in the field, allowing them to perform commissioning and resolve defects on-site, decreasing the time to operations and ultimately reducing risk. The new BIM 360 Asset module will be included as part of BIM 360 Build subscriptions and generally available starting in mid-June.

BIM 360 Assets can easily track all construction assets such as materials (concrete, wood, drywall), components, and equipment (air handling units, pumps, chillers, elevators), moveable equipment (forklift, excavator, concrete buckets), and rooms or areas. Traditionally, assets have been tracked using multiple spreadsheets or paper-based tools, a disorganized and time-consuming process particularly when an asset needs to be accounted for throughout the lifecycle of a project. When asset data is disconnected from the project and in siloes, asset tracking – such as determining the installation status of an HVAC unit, pinpointing the location of an excavator, or scheduling interior finishes that require a long lead time – can be inefficient. This lack of connectivity can lead to scheduling delays, cost overruns, and potential liability if assets are installed incorrectly – not to mention poor client satisfaction when the owner is obliged to assume responsibility during facility management set-up.

Autodesk introduced a new Platform as a Service it’s calling and a $100 million fund to help prime the development pump. The Forge Platform will offer open application programming interfaces (APIs) and software development kits (SDKs) for developers to build cloud-powered apps and services.

Autodesk Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) Activities

In August 2020 Autodesk acquired Pype and its portfolio of cloud-based software solutions for the construction industry. This acquisition and resulting product integrations will provide additional value for Autodesk Construction Cloud users, allowing general contractors, subcontractors, and owners to automate workflows such as submittals and project closeout to increase overall productivity and reduce risk throughout the project lifecycle. Autodesk plans to integrate Pype within its Autodesk Construction Cloud portfolio, which encompasses best-in-class solutions Assemble, BIM 360, BuildingConnected and PlanGrid.

Pype’s solutions use artificial intelligence and machine learning to extract and process data from project plans and specifications. The resulting data provides unprecedented insights on project management workflows, helps teams identify actionable information to close communication gaps between design, construction, and operations teams, and ensures a higher level of quality, efficiency, and risk management on projects. Pype marks Autodesk’s fourth construction-based acquisition in recent years, joining the acquisitions of Assemble in July 2018, PlanGrid in December 2018, and BuildingConnected in January 2019.

In 2019, Autodesk acquired BuildingConnected for $275 million. This acquisition will add bid management, risk analysis, and other preconstruction solutions to Autodesk's construction portfolio.

BuildingConnected, along with Autodesk BIM 360, Revit, AutoCAD, and the acquisitions of PlanGrid and Assemble Systems, gives Autodesk a comprehensive construction offering and go-to-market capabilities.

Total subscriptions were 2,71 million, a net increase of 132,000 from the fourth quarter of fiscal 2016. Under which, new model subscriptions (product (formerly titled Desktop), enterprise flexible license, and cloud subscription) were 567,000, a net increase of 140,000.

The increase in new model subscriptions was led by product subscription. Maintenance subscriptions were 2,14 million, a net decrease of 8,000 from the fourth quarter of fiscal 2016.

Autodesk Market Opportunities, M&A and Geo Expansions

In May 2020 Autodesk introduced new integration capabilities for Autodesk Construction Cloud with the release of a new integration platform Autodesk Construction Cloud Connect and an expansion of its partner ecosystem. Autodesk added several new APIs enabling custom connections for BIM 360 and PlanGrid, and 15 new native integrations, bringing the total number of direct integrations in the Autodesk Construction Cloud ecosystem up to over 140. Project teams can now more easily build custom integrations and streamline data across workflows – from design to planning, building, and operations – so they can increase efficiency and productivity.

Autodesk Construction Cloud Connect (ACC Connect), an evolution of PlanGrid Connect, is an intuitive, ready-to-use integration platform that allows customers to create flexible integrations without writing code. Powered by Workato, ACC Connect supports integrations for Assemble, BIM 360, BuildingConnected, and PlanGrid. Customers can connect their Autodesk Construction Cloud products to automate continuous or scheduled data flows with a wide range of SaaS applications including Box, Smartsheet, DocuSign, and QuickBooks Online.

Autodesk Construction Cloud customers can collaborate on workflows across the building lifecycle, and they may turn to point solutions for specific activities such as file sharing, expense management, and time tracking. Instead of dedicating software development resources, which can be costly and challenging to find, to build custom integrations between Autodesk products and these specialized solutions, customers can now rely on ACC Connect to easily configure their own integrations.

Since 1982 Autodesk has been selling desktop engineering and design applications and lately it has been beefing up its Cloud applications business.

Autodesk acquired Shotgun Software for its Cloud-based production management applications for the entertainment industry. That followed other acquisitions including that of Qontext, an enterprise social collaboration platform that is part of Autodesk 360 cloud-based service.

Autodesk started making available its flagship products like Autodesk BIM 360, PLM 360, Sim 360, and Fusion 360 in the Cloud. The transition to a subscription-based business model is well underway at Autodesk. While sales of traditional software licenses for AutoCAD remain the big revenue generator for the San Rafael, California-based company, executives are banking on the cloud to drive sales growth.

Autodesk Risks and Challenges

Develop and introduce new products and services exposes Autodesk to risks such as limited customer acceptance, costs related to product defects, and large expenditures, each of which may not result in additional net revenue or could result in decreased net revenue. Dependent on international revenue and operations and are subject to related risks of conducting business globally.

The company's offerings like Fusion 360, BIM 360, and PLM 360 are also gaining traction. However, in the near term, its profitability will remain under pressure due to investments in cloud-based infrastructure and marketing initiatives. Further, the discontinuation of the perpetual license offerings in the following year may impact its financials.

Autodesk Ecosystem, Partners, Resellers and SI

In January 2020 Autodesk and European construction service provider, STRABAG signed a letter of intent in Munich, aiming to cooperate even more closely in the digitization of the construction industry in the future. The agreement strengthens the long-standing relationship between the two companies and focuses on the common development of BIM applications tailored to the requirements of the European market. In doing so, the diverse experience that STRABAG is gathering on construction sites throughout Europe could enable a more practice-oriented development of potential software solutions. These will be tested and optimized within the framework of existing construction projects. A special focus will be the integration of corresponding applications for construction and logistics processes – Autodesk and STRABAG expect high and yet often the unused potential of BIM.

As a first step, the companies are conducting a series of joint workshops in which experts from both companies deal with important key issues. Currently, the first series on the topic of infrastructure, a focus area of STRABAG, is already underway. The expansion and maintenance of the transport infrastructure are one of the largest future projects, especially in Germany, leading to various opportunities for the construction industry. Approximately 2,500 bridges need to be renovated or adapted for higher traffic volumes. At the same time, Building Information Modeling is required as a planning basis for public-sector tenders from 2020.

Similar to other legacy vendors, Autodesk is converting its on-premise license and maintenance to Cloud subscriptions. One issue facing Autodesk is its heavy reliance on distributors such as Tech Data, which makes such migration more difficult and time-consuming to accomplish.

Autodesk licenses or sells its products and services globally, primarily through indirect channels consisting of distributors and resellers. It has a network of approximately 2,200 resellers and distributors worldwide.

Autodesk launched its Cleantech Partner Program in mainland China. This launch represents a key milestone in the expansion of the Autodesk Cleantech Partner Program, as China will become the fastest growing Cleantech market in the next decade.

Tech Data Corporation is the largest reseller for Autodesk, accounting for 31% of total Autodesk revenue in 2018.
