In August 2019, Automattic has acquired Tumblr, a long-time friendly rival company. Just six years after Yahoo acquired Tumblr for $1.1 billion, the company has been acquired from Verizon, who indirectly acquired Tumblr when it bought Yahoo in 2017. Tumblr is Automattic’s biggest acquisition yet in terms of product users and employees gained. The microblogging and social networking website currently hosts 475.1 million blogs, for which Automattic now assumes operating costs. All 200 of Tumblr’s employees are moved to Automattic, bringing the company’s total employee count over 1,000.

Automattic Market Opportunities, M&A and Geo Expansions
In September 2019, Automattic has raised $300M in a Series D investment round from Salesforce Ventures, who joins Insight, Tiger Global, and True Ventures as an investor. Automattic will use the new capital to accelerate its roadmap (“perhaps by double”) and scale up its existing products – including WordPress.com, WordPress VIP, WooCommerce, Jetpack, and Tumblr.
