DrFirst Strengths, Domain Expertise, and Key Differentiators

DrFirst offers a comprehensive set of tools and services that optimize the entire medication management process.

From the time a patient is interviewed, a prescription is written and a follow up occurs to confirm a patient is adhering to their care instruction, their platform supports each phase of medication management including secure, HIPAA compliant solutions that help providers curb opioid abuse without negatively impacting patient safety and outcomes. DrFirst is offering e-prescribing for controlled substances (EPCS) and is considered the industry standard for providers nationwide.

DrFirst Recent Developments

In April 2019, mumms Software integrated with DrFirst, the nation's leading provider of e-prescribing, price transparency, and medication management solutions. Unprecedented among hospice and palliative care EMRs, this in-workflow integration will give clinicians using mumms Hummingbird EMR seamless access to prescribe both legend and scheduled drugs without exiting the EMR, saving them time and improving the comfort and safety of their patients.

DrFirst unveiled its new mobile e-prescribing system dubbed iPrescribe. The new system is designed to help providers improve first-fill medication adherence, fight opioid abuse with in-workflow decision support tools, increase prescriber efficiency including working across multiple care provider facilities and EHRs, and drive better quality of care and reduce medication errors via improved data visibility.

DrFirst revealed that its care collaboration platform, Backline, is being used to mobilize and expand healthcare capacity in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Backline enables the delivery of “healthcare without walls” through telehealth capabilities that empower clinicians to provide patient care beyond the traditional confines of a hospital, doctor’s office, clinic, or long-term care facility.

DrFirst Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) Activities

In 2017, DrFirst acquired VisibilityRx for clinical trial recruitment services to life sciences, clinical research organizations, and pharmacies.

In 2016, DrFirst acquired iPrescribe.net, a mobile e-prescribing application. Its standalone E-prescribing solution is used by 250 PM and EHR systems. Also, It has developed a modular EHR for Meaningful Use.

In 2011, DrFirst's acquisition of AdherenceRx enabled it to create its new Patient Innovation division that provides the electronic tools, health coaching, and patient support via phone, email and SMS text that physician practices and health plans need to reduce medical non-adherence.

In May 2021, Queen Anne’s County Department of Emergency Services is the first in Maryland to take advantage of a state budget provision to help speed time to care and protect patients from adverse drug events during emergency calls.

Maryland’s program enables counties to implement Backline for EMS, an award-winning care collaboration platform by healthcare technology pioneer DrFirst. Queen Anne’s County paramedics and emergency medical technicians (EMTs) now have real-time access to patients’ medication histories and can send secure messages to local hospitals.

In April 2021, Galva Pharmacy started using DrFirst’s patented AI solution, SmartSuite, within its Speed Script pharmacy management system (PMS) to improve accuracy and efficiency, allowing pharmacy staff to spend more time with patients.

DrFirst offerings are used by approximately 300,000 healthcare professionals, including more than 100,000 prescribers, and over 1,400 hospitals in the U.S. and Canada. In addition, nearly half of EHRs in the U.S. use DrFirst technology.

Among DrFirst customers are Hugh Chatham Memorial Hospital, ManagementPlus, Berger Health, Cedar Creek Living Center, Knox Community Hospital, Avera Health, Groves Community Hospice, North Canyon Medical Center, North Texas Hand Surgery Associates, Sebasticook Valley Health, Greenway, Crescent City Surgical Center, Summit Healthcare Regional Medical Center, Bogardus Medical Systems, Oakland Southfield Physicians, Huron Valley Physicians Association and many other.

DrFirst Market Opportunities, M&A and Geo Expansions

In May 2021, DrFirst closed a $50 million equity investment from Sixth Street Growth, the growth investing platform of Sixth Street, a leading global investment firm. Following Sixth Street’s previous $35 million investment and another $50 million from Goldman Sachs Growth, both in 2020, DrFirst’s investment total over the past year is now $135 million.

In January 2021, by processing more than 100 million benefit and pricing inquiries within prescribing workflows through its real-time myBenefitCheck tool, DrFirst gives providers and patients information on alternative medications that may be more affordable during an encounter.

myBenefitCheck provides physicians with patient-specific, actual costs for prescribed medications as well as therapeutically appropriate alternatives. When prescribers have up-to-the-minute, accurate drug information based on a patient’s specific insurance benefits, clinicians and patients can discuss therapy alternatives and minimize or remove financial obstacles while they are face to face during an office visit or consultation.

In February 2018, DrFirst launched iPrescribeSM, a mobile app that allows physicians to prescribe legend drugs and controlled substances while complying with state prescription drug monitoring program (PDMP) requirements.

In April 2019, DaFirst structured a new $17 million commercial financing facility with SunTrust Banks, Inc. The financing extends DrFirst's strategic relationship with SunTrust Banks, a partnership that initially began in 2015.

DrFirst Risks and Challenges

DrFirst has the potential of becoming a dominant player in the e-prescribing space, positioning itself as the alternative to the market leader Allscripts. The question remains whether it can build on its organic growth or compress the time to market through a series of acquisitions. The latter path could result in a shift in its collaborative culture, a key differentiator that has underpinned much of its history.

DrFirst Ecosystem, Partners, Resellers and SI
