eClinicalWorks Recent Developments

In January 2018, eClinicalWorks, a large vendor of electronic health records, has launched what the company calls a first-of-its-kind virtual assistant, named Eva, to help doctors and other care providers more quickly find patient information.

In October 2018, eClinicalWorks integrated with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Blue Button 2.0 application programming interface (API). The Blue Button 2.0 API helped eClinicalWorks users obtain certain patient information including a type of Medicare coverage, prescriptions, and primary care treatment. Patients also have control over how their health data is used authorized by MyMedicare.gov. Blue Button 2.0 also uses the HL7 Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) standard for patient data.

In October 2018, eClinicalWorks®, presented Prizma, a health information search engine, to facilitate care across networks. By coordinating information from interoperability networks, such as CommonWell and Carequality, as well as payers such as CMS Blue Button® 2.0 API, Prizma established one longitudinal view, providing the critical information providers need to make informed health decisions.

Prizma is integrated directly into the eClinicalWorks Electronic Health Record (EHR), providing seamless access for providers, ensuring complete and accurate patient information at the point of care. Also the same month, eClinicalWorks launched a new EHR-integrated Opioid Risk Tool (ORT) designed to assess a patient’s risk for opioid misuse and enable providers to address potential cases of substance use disorder in accordance with treatment protocols.

In October 2017, eClinicalWorks®, a leader in healthcare IT solutions, supported OpenNotes, an international movement dedicated to making healthcare more open and transparent. The news supports enabling clinicians to easily share visit notes with patients using the eClinicalWorks Patient Portal.

eClinicalWorks Strengths

eClinicalWorks offers cloud-based electronic health records and practice management services, allowing medical practices to improve efficiency and enhance patient care regardless of practice size, specialty, or a number of locations.

With approximately one in five Americans’ health data stored using eClinicalWorks software, the vendor has established one of the largest Software as a Service (SaaS) networks for the healthcare industry.

Providers at hospitals and health systems across the country faced major care challenges when dealing with the aftermath of natural disasters including Hurricane Harvey, Hurricane Irma, and the northern California wildfires. The latter charred more than 200,000 acres of land across 10 counties and was declared a public health emergency by HHS. Natural disasters of this magnitude can have a significant impact on patient access to care, health data access, and clinician workflows. Patients fleeing natural disasters often seek care at medical facilities they have not visited previously, which requires providers to find ways to access necessary patient health information for well-informed clinical decision-making. P

etaluma Health Center CMIO Danielle Oryn saw firsthand how natural disasters can prompt a sudden and pressing need to quickly access patient EHRs for efficient care delivery. With expectations to treat higher-than-normal patient volumes, health center officials immediately made efforts to leverage all communication, analytics, and health data exchange tools available through Petaluma’s eClinicalWorks EHR system to meet the needs of all affected patients in the area.

To ensure all patients in need of treatment knew where to find access to care, health center officials used the eClinicalWorks EHR to issue notifications that the facility was open. Petaluma’s EHR system includes patient EHRs on all visitors that have come into the health center over the past several years.
