EMIS Health Recent Developments
In April 2020, EMIS Health releases a video consultation service for pharmacies. Pharmacists would normally meet face to face to give clinical advice, by using this new digital tool will help them to protect themselves and their staff and to extend the services they offer.
Outside the Covid-19 response, a real highlight was the smooth delivery of EMIS Health’s transition to the new NHS GP IT Futures framework and Digital Buying Catalogue in England. The launch of EMIS-X Analytics in the second half of 2020 is the shape of things to come: next-level innovation that will help drive transformation in the healthcare industry.
EMIS Health Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) Activities
In March 2020, Emis acquired Pinnacle Health Partnership LLP and Pinnacle Systems Management Ltd – owners and operators of the widely-used PharmOutcomes platform. PharmOutcomes is a secure, web-based service management solution used by more than 11,000 community pharmacies to record and manage nationally and locally commissioned patient services such as flu vaccinations, the Community Pharmacist Consultation Service and hospital discharge referral management.
By joining up the technology, Emis Health will make it easier for the pharmacy to deliver a wider range of patient services – including referrals from NHS 111 and GP practices – and to fulfil the requirements of the new contract.
In November 2018, EMIS acquired Dovetail Digital, a leading early-stage UK technology business specialising in blockchain software for the healthcare market, for an initial consideration of £2.5m.
The acquisition is in line with the Group’s strategy of identifying sustainable long-term market opportunities delivering connected healthcare systems.
Dovetail Lab creates software that gives patients full control of their healthcare records, delivering a secure exchange of data between different health services and new digital technologies involved in inpatient care.
Its patent-pending blockchain-based technology delivers accountability, security and trust in the transmission of healthcare data, whilst mitigating risk and maximising health outcomes for patients.
Blockchain is a key element of our updated technology Roadmap.
The team based in London will join EMIS Group as part of the acquisition, including Dovetail Lab’s CEO and co-founder Alexandra Eavis.
Existing Dovetail Lab shareholders (comprising management and early-stage investors) will retain a 10% share of the original business subject to a call option in favour of EMIS Group exercisable between 2023 and 2025.

EMIS Health Market Opportunities, M&A and Geo Expansions
The EMIS Health segment comprises business areas where revenues are generated from NHS organisations. This includes the primary, community and acute A&E markets and operates under the EMIS brand.
Driven in part by higher than usual hardware sales resulting from the need for rapid deployment of mobile working solutions during the lockdown, revenue in 2020 increased by 7% in EMIS Health to £107.8m (2019: £100.9m).
In April 2020, EMIS Health granted full roll-out approval (FRA) from NHS Digital for Electronic Prescription Service (EPS) to be used by primary care clinical services using EMIS Web. With EPS, healthcare professionals can prescribe electronically, helping to streamline processes and reduce reliance on paper. Sending prescriptions directly to pharmacies reduces practice footfall and enables a more efficient, convenient service for patients. This new functionality help groups of healthcare practitioners work together in hubs across their local areas. With practices affected by closures and the social distancing of both patients and clinicians, this supports flexible, extended access to healthcare services.
EMIS Health has previously been granted FRA for GP Connect with EMIS Web. The two services enable practices to join together and work in local hubs to provide services to their communities. GP Connect provides a secure HTML view of a patient’s record, regardless of whether they’re registered at that practice, or which clinical system their practice uses. Integrating EPS and GP Connect into EMIS Web Clinical Services helps to enable safe, efficient and joined-up care, fundamental in managing the current national health crisis.
EMIS Group has made a positive start to 2018 and has already secured revenue for the year ahead amounting to over 90% of the revenue we reported in 2017.
EMIS Health Risks and Challenges
In March 2019, EMIS Health appointed Suzy Foster as CEO. She will be responsible for EMIS Health’s end-to-end integrated care offerings to the NHS. Suzy has previously held senior roles at Microsoft UK and ran their healthcare business for four years.
One of the key initiatives for EMIS was to convert the GPs that have been on iSoft platform, which has been dropped by parent company CSC. It would be incumbent on EMIS to ensure smooth migration for these users.
The same applies to the rapid rollout of EMIS Web, which could determine the adoption rates of its remaining customers still running older versions of EMIS.
EMIS Health Ecosystem, Partners, Resellers and SI
In June 2020, EMIS Health partnered with Arc Health, This partnership allows customers to remotely assess care home residents using remote examination technology. The partnership allows GP surgeries to undertake virtual ward rounds, minimising care home visits and preventing unnecessary hospitalisation of residents, in addition to reducing transmission of COVID-19.
In June 2019, IQVIA partnered with EMIS Health to enable GPs in England to electronically 'prescribe' apps evaluated against NHS standards to patients.
The partnered will see IQVIA help populate the EMIS App Library, bringing together their AppleScript digital health prescribing and monitoring platform and the EMIS Web clinical system.
In July 2018, EMIS Health partnered with Diabetes UK to issue new Information Prescriptions on vital foot care for people with diabetes.
