Epic Systems Strengths, Domain Expertise, and Key Differentiators

Epic specializes in healthcare applications for mid-sized and large medical groups, hospitals, academic centers, and integrated healthcare organizations. With 33 years of steady growth and successful implementations, Epic is considered the silent giant in electronic health record adoptions.

Its 350 customers represent approximately 300,000 physicians and serve a patient footprint that could cover half of the U.S.patient population when fully rolled out. Epic is employee-owned and it relies solely on internal development (i.e.no acquisitions), making it a rare commodity in the software industry.

With more than 9,800 employees, Epic invests heavily in R&D. Epic has developed one of the largest integrated suites of healthcare applications and one of the few to integrate clinical, access, and revenue applications across the hospital-to-clinic continuum of care.

Epic is at the forefront of patient-record interoperability - exchanging nearly 3.4 million documents, representing over 760,000 patient records monthly with Epic and non-Epic sites. One of its largest EHR customers is Kaiser Permanente, the $48-bilion health system with 37 hospitals, 611 medical offices, and nine million members.

Epic Systems Recent Developments

Epic's all-encompassing EHR strategy may have to shift in wake of increased demand for interoperability with external systems.

Epic Systems Market Opportunities, M&A and Geo Expansions

Epic's market focus is mid-sized to large health care organizations, pediatric hospitals, and academic medical centers. In the United States, Epic has experienced steep growth over the last 10 years. In other theaters, Epic has been quietly expanding by setting up offices in Europe, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia. Because of its focus on making its customers successful, Epic is expected to continue to make inroads into large health systems around the world by leveraging its marquee references.

Epic Systems builds large data centers at its Verona, Wis. campus, in which it will operate the electronic health records (EHR) systems and data for many of its medical groups and small hospital clients. It brings Epic one big step closer to offering a “software as a service” solution, which some of its competitors already offer.

Epic Systems expanded with five new buildings each planned to be around 100,000 square feet. The imaginative plans are the latest in a series of expansions for the company, which now employs more than 9,800 people on Verona’s west end.

Epic Systems Risks and Challenges

Epic Systems will no longer pursue further integration with Google Cloud. The EHR vendor said it has not seen enough excitement around its partnership with Google Cloud. This could lead to a potential loss of customers.

Since Epic develops and sustains its own healthcare applications from scratch, it has taken the end-to-end integration and patient safety to heart. The downside is that Epic will not sell pieces of its core clinical systems separately making the decision to purchase significantly.

For customers, the decision of replacing Epic with something else would no doubt be a wrenching one. Hence many Epic customers are affiliated with university systems that are not likely to be bought by investor-owned healthcare systems. Still, Epic’s independence streak could be a bitter pill to swallow for its customers and perhaps its ecosystem of developers and partners.

Epic Systems Ecosystem, Partners, Resellers and SI

In July 2018, EPIC Systems partnered with key investors to create a new corporation, registered as EPIC Systems Group. The agreement was led by Compass Group Equity Partners, a private equity firm based in St.Louis, Missouri. The acquisition injects growth and new expertise into EPIC's core business groups. Epic relies on its direct sales force and word-of-mouth recommendations from its loyal customers.

Epic headquarters is located on a 950-acre rural campus in Verona, WI. It also keeps sales offices in the Netherlands, Dubai, and Singapore.

In the past year, Epic has revealed two big-name partnerships nevertheless. It's joined with Apple -- another famously idiosyncratic, go-it-alone enterprise -- on the HealthKit app and with IBM in pursuing one of the last great whales.
