Fujitsu Strengths, Domain Expertise, and Key Differentiators
Both revenue and operating profit for the first half of 2021 increased from the previous year. Revenue increased by 2% and operating profit increased by 30%. This growth is due to a gradual recovery in demand for IT investment and DX. The growing demand-supply imbalance for semiconductors and electronic components is having different impacts on different segments—a negative impact on Technology Solutions and a positive impact on Device Solutions.
Fujitsu Recent Developments
In September 2021, Fujitsu Limited announced the introduction of a highly accurate AI technology to predict vessel collision risks on complex sea routes, including bay areas. In September 2021, Fujitsu Limited and Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) announced the introduction of Fujitsu’s quantum-inspired Digital Annealer technology to significantly streamline complex stowage planning for car carriers. The Digital Annealer will play a role in automating aspects of the stowage planning process for NYK’s dedicated car carriers, an enormously complex task involving a vast number of possible stowage patterns depending on the number of vehicles loaded, vehicle models, and the number of ports of call along the shipping route.
In June 2021, Fujitsu Limited deployed of a factorywide production status visualization system in cooperation with Ricoh Co., Ltd. The new system leverages Fujitsu’s plant visualization solution, FUJITSU Manufacturing Industry Solution COLMINA Intelligent Dashboard, to collect and process production information from Ricoh’s chemical plant in Numazu, Japan, offering a comprehensive view of the entire plant’s production status in real-time.
Fujitsu Market Opportunities, M&A and Geo Expansions
In August 2021, Fujitsu released its Fujitsu Future Insights Global Digital Transformation Survey Report 2021, highlighting how organizations responded to the changes that the pandemic caused. The survey results revealed the factors that contributed to an effective pandemic response, identifying essential organizational capabilities and important insights in designing successful businesses after the pandemic. Though the impact to revenue was significant for many, 78% of business leaders from offline organizations said that they were able to effectively respond to the pandemic.
The three main factors contributing to their effective pandemic responses included agility, digitalization, and employee well-being. Resilience and flexibility are perceived as top business priorities in the post-pandemic world. Many respondents also noted the importance of business process automation, data-driven management, and a seamless customer experience where online merges with offline. Many business leaders expect more business processes to become automated. The survey revealed that 44% of respondents from offline organizations predicted that more than half of their current business processes that were not yet automated would be automated by 2025. These expectations offer plenty of opportunities for Fujitsu to help businesses with process automation.
Fujitsu Risks and Challenges
The global chip shortage has caused component supply delays that have resulted in (14.9 billion yen) in lost revenue and (&62m) in lost operating profit. A risk of lost revenue will persist as long as the chip shortage persists.
Fujitsu Ecosystem, Partners, Resellers and SI
In November 2021, Fujitsu and Botanical Water Technologies (BWT) initiated the creation of a blockchain-based water trading platform, Botanical Water Exchange (BWX). Fujitsu will help businesses achieve sustainability commitments and alleviate water shortages through the development of the world's first water-trading platform for the exchange of plant-derived water. BWT leverages its patented technology to purify and re-mineralize water that is normally discarded during the production of vegetable and fruit juices and the processing of sugarcane, providing water to areas where it often proves difficult to secure safe drinking water. The new BWX platform will rely on the FUJITSU Track and Trust service, which uses blockchain technology to ensure end-to-end transparency and traceability of processes, including the refinement, sales, purchase, delivery, and use of the product.
In October 2021, Fujitsu Limited started joint clinical research with the University of Tokyo Hospital to verify the effectiveness of artificial intelligence technology to estimate abnormal heart movements based on electrocardiogram data. This initiative has already succeeded in detecting patients with abnormal heart movements with high accuracy. Also, Fujitsu agreed to collaborate with Trend Micro Incorporated to help automotive-related manufacturers strengthen connected car security measures. Fujitsu will provide a security countermeasure solution for connected cars, the V-SOC (Vehicle-Security Operation Center) service. Trend Micro Cloud One will protect the backend cloud infrastructure. These solutions will work in tandem to detect vehicle abnormalities such as gas pedal and brake malfunctions and add detection capabilities for unauthorized communications and attempts to tamper with telematics servers. Also, Aichi Cancer Center and Fujitsu Limited announced the development of an AI solution able to select effective medical treatment from a wide range of drugs, based on patients’ individual cancer types and various genomic variants.
