GE Digital Strengths, Domain Expertise, and Key Differentiators

GE Digital develops software and connects streams of machine data to analytics and people, providing industrial companies with insights to manage assets and operations.

Predix Platform is GE Digital’s proprietary platform for developing industrial internet of things (IIoT) applications. It was launched to connect physical GE assets to its analytics platform, allowing industrial companies to link assets and collect data to centralize asset performance diagnostics. GE expanded and opened the Predix Platform to companies building industrial applications and services as a cloud-based service that allowed the platform to scale. This was followed by the announcement of Predix cloud in, which GE built specifically to handle the types of data generated by heavy-duty machinery such as jet engines. Industrial companies already face huge complexities across their operations, environments, and computing ecosystems.

GE Digital’s Predix Edge is the solution that brings a new level of ease to the IIoT by enabling businesses to deploy workloads at the edge in a matter of minutes. The changes mark an important course correction for GE Digital, which so far has not delivered the revenue investors wanted and is partly responsible for a 25 percent decline in GE's share price this year to a nearly two-year low. With fixes in place, GE will now emphasize sales to existing customers in its energy, aviation, and oil-and-gas businesses, and scale back efforts to sell to new customers in other sectors.

GE Digital Recent Developments

In November 2021, GE Digital announced Proficy Smart Factory, a manufacturing software suite spanning on-premise, cloud, and mixed architecture software that brings the digital world together with the physical world to deliver holistic operations performance management for today’s connected enterprise. Improving manufacturers’ efficiency, quality, and throughput, Proficy Smart Factory is a powerful operations management solution for process, discrete, and mixed manufacturing environments.

GE Digital Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) Activities

In January 2017 GE Digital acquired Meridium, a global leader in asset performance management (APM) software and services for asset-intensive industries.

As an established Industrial Internet leader, this acquisition will help GE Digital accelerate its comprehensive APM offering and provide a solution to customers that unifies real-time analytics with reliability-centered maintenance best practices, delivering a complete APM solution. Meridium customers will gain access to GE’s deep domain expertise in real-time data management and advanced industrial analytics.

GE Digital Market Opportunities, M&A and Geo Expansions

In November 2018 GE Digital released a new Predix Edge offering aimed at simplifying edge-to-cloud computing and helping businesses securely progress their Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) initiatives from pilot to production.

GE Digital also introduced its Predix Private Cloud (PPC) solution, an on-premises deployment of the Predix platform, which gives customers the privacy, security, data sovereignty, and data isolation provided by a private cloud infrastructure.

GE Digital Risks and Challenges

In December 2018, Ge Digital sold a majority stake in ServiceMax for $400 million, a business that makes computer models for workforce optimization, to private equity firm Silver Lake, after buying the company back in 2016 for $916 million.

GE plans to spin off its GE Digital business, including its Predix Internet of Things (IoT) platform, into a new, independent company owned by GE. The as-yet-unnamed company will start with $1.2 billion in annual software revenue from its existing customer base. This path the company is taking is part of the new CEO General Electric hired, Henry Lawrence Culp's strategy.

GE Digital Ecosystem, Partners, Resellers and SI

In October 2021, GE Digital today announced that it had signed a Memo of Understanding with FLAPZ, a new aviation marketplace based in Colombia, to work toward a mutual goal: increase safety in Business & General Aviation in Colombia and other parts of Latin America. The companies plan to work together to provide GE Digital’s Safety Insight for Business Jets, a C-FOQA software and services solution, to FLAPZ’s consortium that will make it easy for business jet operators to improve safety by implementing safety procedures at the highest level of international standards.

In July 2018 GE and Microsoft partnered, bringing together operational technology and information technology to eliminate hurdles industrial companies face in advancing digital transformation projects.

As part of the union, GE Digital plans to standardize its Predix solutions on Microsoft Azure and will deeply integrate the Predix portfolio with Azure’s native cloud capabilities, including Azure IoT and Azure Data and Analytics. The parties will also co-sell and go-to-market together, offering end customers premier Industrial IoT (IIoT) solutions across verticals. In addition, GE will leverage Microsoft Azure across its business for additional IT workloads and productivity tools, including internal Predix-based deployments, to drive innovation across the company.
