Motorola Solutions Strengths, Domain Expertise, and Key Differentiators

Motorola Solutions is a provider of mission-critical communication solutions and services for government and enterprise customers. They offer comprehensive solutions that include infrastructure, devices, software applications, video cameras and analytics, and services that help their customers work safely and efficiently. In October 2019, Motorola Solutions expanded its set of cloud-based software and video capabilities for the public safety community. These include WAVE push-to-talk (PTT) streaming video, a new service that allows users to push live video to individuals, groups, or dispatchers, CommandCentral Community, a next-generation community engagement solution designed to optimize information sharing between agencies and the public, and CommandCentral Records, a cloud-based records and evidence management solution.

Motorola Solutions Recent Developments

In July 2020 Motorola Solutions added three cloud-based offerings to its CommandCentral software suite: CommandCentral 9-1-1 Smart Transcription, CommandCentral 9-1-1 Citizen Input, and PremierOne Cloud CAD. These offerings provide emergency call handlers and the computer-aided dispatch (CAD) operators who dispatch 9-1-1 calls to police, fire, and emergency medical services with the ability to streamline workflows and improve the monitoring and integrity of information in a secure government cloud environment, all while supporting the continuity of public safety operations.

CommandCentral 9-1-1 Smart Transcription. Smart Transcription is a cloud-based service that can be enabled remotely and integrates with the existing VESTA 9-1-1 call handling platform. It takes the voice audio from a 9-1-1, non-emergency or administrative call and transcribes it in real-time into a searchable text transcript. This provides a comprehensive way to verify caller information, monitor calls in real-time and store transcripts in CommandCentral Vault for post-call analysis, as well as to maintain the chain of custody of evidence.

CommandCentral 9-1-1 Citizen Input. Citizen Input integrates with existing VESTA 9-1-1 and CallWorks CallStation call handling platforms. It is a cloud-based service that allows citizens to send live streaming video, photographs, and recordings to the PSAP in a controlled, permission-based procedure. The media can optionally be viewed as it is received and is stored in CommandCentral Vault for post-call analysis, as well as to maintain the chain of custody of evidence. The service can be implemented remotely.

PremierOne Cloud CAD. Cloud CAD is a cloud-based service that leverages proven PremierOne CAD technology, tested and trusted by agencies worldwide, to streamline the capture, correlation and real-time distribution of mission-critical information for improved dispatch decision-making and increased responder awareness and safety. It provides CAD leadership with reporting and the ability to conduct remote monitoring. It also provides agencies the technical capability to establish remote workstations for their dispatchers, consistent with their agency policy and in compliance with Criminal Justice Information Service (CJIS) requirements, governing public safety information and data security.

In July 2019, Motorola Solutions acquired WatchGuard, Inc., a U.S. leader in mobile video solutions. WatchGuard designs and manufactures in-car video systems, body-worn cameras, evidence management systems and software.

Motorola Solutions Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) Activities

In August 2020 Motorola Solutions acquired Callyo, a cloud-based mobile application provider for law enforcement. The terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Callyo is a software as a service company (SaaS) serving thousands of public safety customers across North America. Its portfolio includes two application suites – 10-21, which simplifies communication between first responders and citizens, and Callyo, which provides investigative tools that improve digital evidence collection.

This acquisition adds to Motorola Solutions’ existing command center software suite critical mobile technology capabilities that enable information to flow seamlessly from the field to the command center.

In March 2019, Motorola Solutions acquired Avtec, Inc., a leading U.S. provider of advanced dispatch solutions for public safety and commercial customers. In January 2019, Motorola Solutions acquired VaaS International Holdings, Inc., a "video analysis as a service" company that is a global provider of data and image analytics for vehicle location for a purchase price of $445 million. This acquisition expands its command center software portfolio.

In June 2020 Motorola Solutions acquired IndigoVision, a U.K.-based provider of end-to-end video security solutions. Based in Edinburgh, Scotland, IndigoVision develops complete, end-to-end video security solutions, including cameras, video management software, encoders, and storage devices.

The acquisition demonstrates Motorola Solutions’ continued investment in video security and analytics and reinforces its strategy of becoming a leader in next-generation, end-to-end video security solutions. IndigoVision's products will complement Motorola Solutions’ existing video portfolio, which includes fixed cameras, in-car and body-worn cameras, and advanced analytics and software, and will provide enhanced go-to-market reach across a wider customer base.

In March 2018, Motorola Solutions acquired Avigilon Corporation, a provider of advanced security and video solutions including video analytics, network video management hardware and software, video cameras, and access control solutions for a purchase price of $974 million, and Plant Holdings, Inc., the parent company of Airbus DS Communications for a purchase price of $237 million. This acquisition expands its software portfolio in the command center with additional solutions for Next Generation 9-1-1. In 2017 Motorola Solutions acquired Kodiak Networks, a provider of broadband push-to-talk for commercial customers, and Interexport, a managed service provider of communications systems to public safety and commercial customers in Chile.

Motorola Solutions Risks and Challenges

Motorola Solutions' largest customers are the United States federal government (through multiple contracts with its various branches and agencies, including the armed services) and the Home Office of the United Kingdom, representing approximately 8% and 7% of its consolidated net sales in 2018, respectively. The loss of these customers could have a material adverse effect on its revenue and earnings over several quarters as many of our contracts with these governments are long-term in nature.
