Planet has more than 700 customers, split between four sectors: civil, agriculture, defense and intelligence, and mapping. In August 2021, the company signed a multi-year launch agreement with SpaceX, making Elon Musk’s venture Planet’s go-to-launch provider for its satellites through 2025.
Planet Labs Market Opportunities, M&A and Geo Expansions
In July 2021, Planet Labs and dMY Technology Group, Inc., a publicly traded special purpose acquisition company, entered into a merger agreement under which Planet will become a publicly-traded company. Upon closing, the combined company will retain the Planet name and be listed on the NYSE under the ticker symbol “PL.” The transaction values Planet at a post-transaction equity value of approximately $2.8 billion.
In 2019, Planet Labs has raised $168 Million in series D funding. Planet Labs has raised $384m in venture funding and launched dozens of small satellites, which it calls Doves, which are together capable of capturing fresh images of the entire planet every day. The system is used by governments, private companies and non-profit organisations to monitor economic activity, agriculture and environmental change.
Planet Labs Risks and Challenges
The number of satellites that Planet has in orbit changes often. They are either launching more or the satellites are approaching their end of life and reentering the atmosphere and burning up.
Planet Labs Ecosystem, Partners, Resellers and SI
Planet Labs extended its relationship with Google with a partnership made in 2021, Planet customers can use Google Cloud to store and process data, and access Google’s other products such as its data analytics warehouse BigQuery. The two companies’ collaboration stretches back to 2017, when Google sold its satellite imaging business, Terra Bella, to Planet Labs.
Planet expanded its partnership with Esri. Esri will be reselling satellite imagery, extending access to Planet’s high cadence data set to the largest GIS community. With this agreement, Esri customers can directly buy Planet imagery. Along with the new reseller agreement, Planet and Esri will collaborate on developing advanced geospatial solutions for civil government and energy.
In March 2020, Planet partnered with Seisan, a custom software solutions and systems integration company specializing in leveraging geospatial technologies. By becoming a premiere Planet partner, Seisan offers next-level competitive advantages and insights into many industry verticals. Traditional satellite partners lack the ability to collect meaningful imagery at the speed in which Planet can. Leveraging this unique dataset, Seisan would be able to build machine learning imagery analysis along with traditional systems integration and data transformation techniques. These software solutions would bring an unprecedented level of geospatial awareness.
In December 2019, Planet updated its ArcGIS Pro integration, adding access to all Planet imagery, including PlanetScope, SkySat and Planet Basemaps, as well as leading public sector imagery, Landsat and Sentinel. Planet’s imagery, combined with ArcGIS software, empowers GIS workflows and enriches GIS databases with the most up-to-date imagery, leading to more timely and informed decision making.
