PSI Software Strengths, Domain Expertise, and Key Differentiators
PSI has been on the market since 1969, as an independent software producer, and for many years a technological software provider in process control systems for energy grid operators and industrial production. PSI software enables efficient use of energy, labour and raw materials in energy management (gas, oil, electricity, heating, energy trading, public transport) and production management (raw material extraction, metal production, automotive, mechanical engineering, logistics). To this end, PSI has been successfully relying on a combination of artificial intelligence methods and other industrially proven optimization methods for two decades. PSI software products stand for safe, efficient energy supply and optimized production and logistics processes worldwide.
PSI Software Recent Developments
PSI invested EUR 27.8 million in research, product functionality and platform technology in 2020. The platform was expanded to include multi-cloud technology and an app store that delivers platform products to the more than 100 different private clouds of our Group customers and the PSI cloud. After delivery, these products are modified for the customer’s specific operations at runtime by the customer’s IT department, partners and PSI consultants and subsequently rolled out across all affected workstations and technical systems. PSI delivers regular upgradesas-a-services for the software products and the PSI platform.
In July 2019, PSI Metals launched the PSImetals Service Platform. The Service Platform is the new powerful software basis that combines all requirements for a future-proof production management solution for all currently available PSImetals components as well as new services that will be developed in the coming years for metal producers.
PSI Software Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) Activities
Effective July 1, 2020, PSI took over Prognos Energy GmbH effective, a software provider for precise forecasting of feed-in from wind energy and photovoltaics. The Swiss grid planning software specialist NEPLAN AG was acquired with effect from October 29, 2020. Both companies will help further expand the company’s market position in the area of power grid software.
In 2020, PSI acquired of Potsdam-based Prognos Energy GmbH. Prognos Energy has a mature software system for spatial and temporal high-resolution and precise power predictions. With increased meteorological know-how and additional functionality, the PSI software is to be further enhanced for the weather-dependent redispatch of the distribution network operators and for the reduction of control energy costs. In the PSI , Prognos Energy GmbH will be assigned to Energy Management, whereby the existing, comprehensive software product portfolio for transmission and distribution grid operators will be expanded by a high-resolution forecast. In the future, PSI will connect the forecasting system with the numerous forecasting systems based on industrial artificial intelligence.

PSI Software Market Opportunities, M&A and Geo Expansions
In the Energy Management segment, BTC SmartGrid, which was acquired in early 2019, achieved a turnaround in its operating result (including all allocations) as the “Integrated Municipal Utilities and Industry” division and contributed to the segment’s revenue growth of 4% to EUR 120 million. Weak energy prices in the summer led to the postponement of some Russian orders. With the acquisition of PSI Prognos, PSI strengthened their meteorological expertise for more accurate renewable energy feed-in forecasting. The acquisition of the Swiss grid planning software NEPLAN in October brought PSI additional grid calculations and 500 customers around the world.
PSI is embarking on the Internet of Things market by combining new hardware with its software expertise. In 2016 PSI introduced an Industry 4.0 swarm manufacturing process with Internet of Things chips. The process is led by PSI software products, which are already migrated to the PSI Java platform, for order management, optimization, scheduling, data acquisition, control system and logistics with automatic rescheduling in supply disruptions. Compared to a conventional assembly line production, swarm production allows for substantially higher production efficiency, flexibility and reliability. Earlier, PSIpenta extended its digital factory approach by developing new interfaces to other systems for computer aided design and energy management. In the first scenario, car design using CAD systems was integrated into the factory planning processes via electronic data interchange. As a result, all the processes from the order through any modifications in the construction, the procurement processes, production planning and control to the workshop level can be reproduced through integrated applications. In the second scenario, the finished product of an electrical scooter was based on PSIpenta applications for order administration, production planning and control as well as the design approach for the feeding of electrical energy into the production processes.
PSI Software Risks and Challenges
PSI’s strategy for the coming years is focused on the Group’s further transformation into an international software product provider, on ongoing internationalization and on expanding the cloud strategy. If this does not succeed as planned, there is a risk that the PSI Group may not achieve its revenues and earnings targets. In addition, PSI would then still be dependent to a large extent on the general economic development and regulatory framework in Germany.
PSI's challenge remains how it helps its utility and manufacturing embrace and adapt to seismic shifts in their markets because of the rise of the Internet of Things in a time table that serves the best interests of its key stakeholders. Another issue lies in the volatility in the energy market due to falling oil prices and whether it could help or impede some of the previously announced IT modernization projects initiated by its clients. As one of the leading software companies in Germany with 1,650 employees and a long list of blue-chip customers, PSI is in an enviable position of building out its software ecosystem in its target markets of production, energy and infrastructure management. The issue is whether PSIpenta, its ERP software division, has been held back because its vision of digital factory warrants a much more agile development cycle. Some of its customers may probably prefer more frequent updates, or for that matter software modules that can be delivered via the Cloud.
PSI, on the other hand, uses a centralized approach of extending its systems gradually order to take advantage of the economy of scale. In other words, the development of its ERP software will have to fit into the time table of its energy management, or smart grid applications, which tend to move slower because of security concerns. How PSIpenta fits into the overall product roadmap of PSI will be an open question over the next few years.
