Rackspace Recent Developments

Rackspace is primarily a web hosting and managed service provider offering OpenStack-based public cloud services, but it has shifted its strategy to being a managed service provider across a range of public clouds, rather than focusing on its own native cloud storage services. In regards to storage, Rackspace offers Cloud Files and Cloud Block Storage. The vendor’s public cloud services are offered in data centers in the central and eastern U.S., the U.K., Australia, and Hong Kong.

Rackspace Market Opportunities, M&A and Geo Expansions
New sales bookings in 2021 accelerated, with 61% year-over-year, driven by the tectonic shift to multicloud. Today, 92 percent of organizations have a multi-cloud strategy in place or underway, and 82% of large enterprises have adopted a hybrid cloud infrastructure. The adoption rates of multi-cloud and hybrid cloud strategies are expected to continue rising. This fosters innovation by aligning workloads with the cloud service that is best for the use case. Other benefits include failover capabilities for better redundancy and disaster recovery, avoiding vendor lock-in, and pay-as-you-go models.
In 2019 Rackspace acquired Onica, an Amazon Web Services (AWS) Partner Network (APN) Premier Consulting Partner and AWS Managed Service Provider. This acquisition brings Onica’s innovative professional services capabilities, including strategic advisory, architecture and engineering and application development to the Rackspace portfolio.
Rackspace Risks and Challenges
After Rackspace Hosting withdrew from public trading on the New York Stock Exchange in 2016, the company started morphing from offering primarily colocation and managed hosting services into a full-service technology provider partnering with its former hyper-scale competitors.
After going public again in August 2020, Rackspace applied around 85 percent of the cash raised in its IPO to pay down debt. As cloud adoption soared, it is becoming increasingly apparent Rackspace would struggle competing with the likes of Amazon, Microsoft and Google in the public cloud market.
