Smartsheet Market Opportunities, M&A and Geo Expansions

In October 2020, Smartsheet Strengthens Global Footprint by Announcing Regional Content Hosting and Expanded Presence in Germany.

Smartsheet expanded into the EMEA market by partnering with three leading German-based solution providers, Nanga Systems, Eportis and ITKOMM in June 2020. These companies will be joining other EMEA partners as part of Smartsheet Aligned, a best-in-class program for the company’s growing community of partners and solution providers designed to enable the creation of new, high-value offerings.

Since March 2020, governments and agencies responding to the COVID-19 crisis can use the company’s government-specific instance of Smartsheet, Smartsheet Gov, free of charge and without obligation. Smartsheet Gov is a secure, enterprise-grade platform designed specifically for government agencies, built on AWS GovCloud (US) and is the first FedRAMP authorized collaborative work management platform.

In October 2019, Smartsheet introduced several new features and accelerators to enhance its work management platform. There are three separate components within the announcement. The new content collaboration sees the integration of Slope technology into the Smartsheet patform. Smartsheet acquired Slope in January 2019.

The integration with Adobe Creative Cloud enables creative workers to access Smartsheet directly from Adobe. A Smartsheet extension appears as a panel within Adobe Creative Cloud so that content can be managed from within the same screen as they work.

In July 2018, Smartsheet launched Smartsheet Accelerators, a set of industry-proven solutions that enable customers to better manage work management scenarios for IT PMO, Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A), and Professional Services. Smartsheet released three distinct Accelerators chosen for their ability to deliver immediate business value by leveraging best practices gained from insights across the company's thousands of customers. IT is an increasingly important driver of the business. The Smartsheet Accelerator for IT PMO optimizes the entire IT project lifecycle, from project prioritization through tracking, executive reporting, change management, and project archiving.

In May 2017, Smartsheet raised $52.1 million in Series F funding, led by existing investor Insight Venture Partners. Additional Smartsheet investors Madrona Venture Group and Sutter Hill Ventures, and new investor, Summit Partners, also participated in the round. Smartsheet's last round of funding was more than three years ago. With the additional investment, Smartsheet's total financing raised to date is more than $120 million.

Smartsheet Risks and Challenges

Smartsheet needs to focus on acquiring customers internationally, outside of US.

The market for work execution software is rapidly evolving. Its primary competition remains a combination of manual, email- and spreadsheet-based processes from providers such as Microsoft and Google that users have historically relied on to manage work.

Certain its features compete with current products and services offered by Asana, Atlassian, Planview, and Workfront. In addition, certain companies offer lightweight productivity products that compete with some of its platform's features, including Asana and Workfront.

Larger software vendors with substantial resources and smaller upstarts building on new technology platforms may also decide to enter its market by building or acquiring products that compete with their platform. Their principal competitive factors in the market include: ease of deployment and use of applications; product features, quality and functionality; ability to automate processes; ability to integrate with other applications and systems; capability for customization, configurability, integration, security, scalability, and reliability of applications and solutions; vision for the market and product innovation; size of the customer base and level of user adoption; pricing and total cost of ownership; strength of sales and marketing efforts; brand awareness and reputation; and customer experience, including support.

Couple of months later, Smartsheet established a partnership with QBS Distribution, an EMEA software delivery platform. It's primary focus is the UK market.
