In October 2021, a proponent of RAN innovation, VMware announced several updates to its RAN portfolio of products and introduced VMware RAN Intelligent Controller (RIC). VMware RIC, along with VMware Telco Cloud Platform RAN, will help service providers smoothly transition to Open RAN. “When it comes to Open RAN, the genie is out of the bottle. The potential benefits of increasing innovation while reducing operational expense are compelling. As such, VMware is pushing to accelerate the transformation of the RAN along with Open RAN principles,” said Sanjay Uppal, senior vice president and general manager, Service Provider and Edge, VMware. “VMware is paving the way for service providers to modernize the RAN so it is programmable and intelligent, built with best-of-breed solutions from a vibrant partner ecosystem.”
VMWare Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) Activities
In November 2021 Dell Technologies has completed the spin-off of its 81% equity ownership of VMware. Dell acquired EMC and its subsidiaries, including VMware, for $67 billion on Sept. 7, 2016. Dell Technologies and VMware will retain a strong and unique commercial agreement that preserves the most valuable parts of the companies' relationship, such as the co-development of critical solutions and alignment on sales and marketing activities, while allowing strategic flexibility. VMware will continue to use Dell Financial Services to help its customers finance their digital transformations.

In October 2021, VMware announced that John Sabino has joined the company as our new Chief Customer Experience Officer. In May 2021, Business-software maker VMware has promoted its COO Raghu Raghuram to be its CEO, filling a spot previously held by Pat Gelsinger, who became Intel CEO in February 2021. Raghuram has been with VMware since 2003 when the company was still a startup. Over the years, VMware has grown into a nearly $12 billion business, selling so-called virtualization software that allows a single corporate server to operate like multiple servers, improving the performance of a company’s IT operations.
