In March 2021, Works Applications Co. announced that it will transition into a holding company structure through a company split method with effect from 1st April 2021. The rights and obligations of Works’ existing businesses, such as HUE AC series, Ariel series, HUE Classic series, as well as SaaS services such as HUE Works Suite series and HUE Works Suite DX Solutions series, and also the HUE SCM business will be succeeded to subsidiaries which are 100% owned by Works. In June 2019 Bain Capital is considering providing roughly 100 billion yen ($930 million) in assistance to embattled Japanese software developer Works Applications.
Works have been squeezed in recent years by growing development costs and a series of lawsuits. The company wanted to would spin off the department in charge of human resources and payroll management platforms, which are used by over 1,000 major corporations but Bain is expected to take full ownership of the new company in exchange for its assistance.
About 2,000 of Works' 5,000 employees would move to the new entity under the plan.
Works provide software for managing human resources and accounting, in addition to other products designed specifically for Japan's business practices. Its platforms, like Hue and Company, are used by 1,300 mostly large companies. Global expansion is expected to top Works Applications' agenda for the next few years as the vendor aims to build out its presence in the Asia Pacific and North America.
In October 2016, the company made a big splash at the HR Technology Conference in Chicago to showcase its AI Works to the North American audience. In March 2016 Works unveiled AI Works in China, a key growth market.
The goal was to use China as a template to help Works popularize the idea of leveraging a versatile ERP system to store, transfer and replicate domain expertise, business processes as well as industry-specific knowledge from headquarters to local operations. Works also have offices in Singapore, Shanghai, and India.
