Yandex Strengths, Domain Expertise, and Key Differentiators

Yandex.Cloud is a full-fledged cloud platform that provides B2B customers (SMBs and enterprises) and individual developers with scalable infrastructure, storage, machine learning, and development tools to build and enhance cutting-edge digital services and applications. In 2020, the company added 8 new services to the platform, including services in the field of security, serverless computing, and machine learning. The Yandex.Cloud platform has become the first public cloud platform in Russia and the CIS that complies with both international standards such as ISO 27017 and ISO 27018, and Russian regulation in terms of data storage and processing. All Yandex.Cloud services are available on servers located in Russia.

Yandex became profitable in 2003 and its revenues have been continually growing ever since. In May 2011 Yandex went public on the NASDAQ stock exchange, under the ticker YNDX, and subsequently listed on Moscow Exchange in June 2014.

Yandex Recent Developments

In September 2021, Yandex spun off of ClickHouse, Inc. into a standalone company. ClickHouse DBMS was developed by Yandex for processing the data from its web analytics system Yandex.Metrica. This technology was first launched as a prototype in 2009 and released as open-source in June 2016. More than 770 developers from many companies have contributed to ClickHouse since its open-source release five years ago.

In May 2021, Yandex made significant changes to its senior leadership. They appointed Svetlana Demyashkevich, former CFO of X5 Retail Group, as Yandex’s Chief Financial Officer and Vadim Marchuk as Chief Operating Officer. Yandex also appointed Pavel Vlasov, the former Corporate Development Director of Avito, as VP of Corporate Development and M&A.

In February 2021, Yandex was compromised by a data breach. The breach stems from an insider threat. An internal investigation revealed that an employee had been providing unauthorized access to users’ mailboxes for personal gain. As a result of his actions, 4,887 mailboxes were compromised.

In February 2021, Yandex made changes to its organizational structure and created two core business groups: Search, Advertising, and Cloud Services; and E-commerce and RideTech. Each of these business groups combines several segments and experiments, with similar business models, development mechanics, and consumer problems they solve, under a single leader. The Search, Advertising and Cloud business group includes the Search and Portal segment as well as smaller experiments such as Zen, Cloud, Geo, and a few smaller services. The E-commerce and RideTech business group combines our key transactional services, including on-demand transportation, delivery and logistics services (i.e. Taxi segment) as well as Yandex.Market. Other businesses, such as Media Services, Classifieds, SelfDriving Group remain separate business units.

In November 2020, Yandex separated its cloud platform into an independent business unit. The decision was taken on the back of the platform's strong results in 2018-2020.

In August 2020, Yandex launched its Yandex.Pro platform and app, which will help couriers, drivers, and other self-employed individuals find extra work and keep track of their income. Yandex.Pro is a marketplace that connects freelancers looking to work for an entire day or just for several hours to find a suitable job. The Yandex.Pro platform was developed from the successful Yandex.Taximeter app, which has been helping taxi companies and drivers take orders and manage their earnings for many years. Both self-employed individuals and registered individual entrepreneurs can join the Yandex.Pro platform. They can quickly register through the app and connect to the official Russian Federal Tax Service’s My Tax app to enable automatic tax payments. Yandex.Taximeter users will automatically be migrated to Yandex.Pro.

Around 12,400 companies are utilizing Yandex.Cloud. Since the launch in September 2018, Yandex.Cloud has seen rapid growth both in terms of revenue and new customers, with the number of active users reaching 15,000 by the end of December 2020, driven by the increasing demand of Russian and international companies for cloud services for creating and developing their own digital products and industry platforms, working with data, and upgrading IT infrastructure.

Yandex Market Opportunities, M&A and Geo Expansions

Yandex's public cloud platform competes with a number of international and local services, such as Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, Amazon Web Services, Rostelecom, Sberbank, Mail.ru. Yandex.Cloud's revenue is seen tripling to around 3 billion roubles ($40 million) in 2021, but having launched in 2018, it remains one of Yandex's smaller business lines. Yandex realizes that it can not become a significant global player on the cloud platform market by operating only in Russia. Because of that, they plan to launch their cloud business in Germany in 2022, with an initial investment of $30 million.

Yandex Risks and Challenges

In February 2021, Yandex was compromised by a data breach. An internal investigation revealed that an employee had been providing unauthorized access to users’ mailboxes for personal gain. As a result of his actions, 4,887 mailboxes were compromised. The data breach and the exploited security flaws in their services may present a significant risk and create a perception that their products and services are not secure, in turn, users and customers may curtail or altogether stop using their products and services, and Yandex may incur significant legal and financial exposure.

Yandex Ecosystem, Partners, Resellers and SI

Yandex has an extensive sales and support infrastructure, with sales offices in a number of cities in Russia, as well as Minsk, Belarus; Lucerne, Switzerland; Newburyport, Massachusetts, USA; Shanghai, China; Tel Aviv, Israel and Almaty, Kazakhstan.
