Mid August 2020, Follett released Destiny 18.0. Follett unveiled brand-new apps that have been designed from the ground up to bring an easy-to-use, personalized experience to school library patrons using mobile devices. The apps will conveniently facilitate the use of library materials whether students are learning in school or remotely. In addition to providing a great experience for digital content, the new apps also enable users to search across print and digital library content. These new Destiny Discover apps for iOS and Android will be available in the iTunes and Google Play stores, respectively Customers must be on Destiny 18.0 to use the new apps.
In the second quarter of 2020, Follett deployed its market-leading Follett Destiny Library Manager and Resource Manager solutions as well as its Aspen Student Information System to Microsoft Azure. The Azure cloud platform now serves as the data center host for Follett-hosted Destiny and Aspen customers. By hosting their products on Microsoft Azure, they will be able to provide their customers with greater stability, scalability, support, and performance.
In March 2019, Follett launched MyDestiny, a powerful new learning platform that combines an expansive library of ebooks and Open Educational Resources (OERs) with built-in artificial intelligence to help teachers find a quality, standards-aligned resources and to guide students on their learning path from discovery to mastery.
In July 2018 Follett acquired Fishtree, a leading adaptive learning platform that streamlines both the technical integration and educational adoption of personalized learning in school classrooms. Follett will integrate the machine-based learning tools of Fishtree within Follett’s industry leading Destiny content and resource management platform.
The Fishtree platform brings together district-wide resources for every subject, aligns them to any standard or competency and then personalizes the experience for each student based on specific learning profiles while providing a streamlined user experience for the educator and administrator.

Follett School Solutions Market Opportunities, M&A and Geo Expansions
Two not-for-profit organizations serving young students from low-income families have partnered with Follett and its online book fairs to keep kids reading to help counter the “summer slide,” which is expected to have greater impact this year when combined with the COVID-19 school closures. The Illinois-based education solutions provider responded quickly to the separate requests and arranged to hold Follett Book eFairs to ensure the young children each had as many as a dozen books to read over the summer. Follett shipped nearly 80,000 print books combined to the two organizations.
In 2016, Follett Acquired Classbook to shore up its school ERP offerings. The acquisition combines Follett’s deep publisher relationships, vast infrastructure, and resources with ClassBook’s market-changing digital services, with the combined entity steadfast in its focus on delivering renowned, high-touch customer service.
Collectively, Follett Virtual Campus (Follett’s online-only bookstore division that primarily services the private and parochial market) and ClassBook will manage approximately 400 virtual store accounts.
Nearly two years after introducing Collections by Destiny, Follett is reporting a total of 2.5 million users, a dramatic increase in usage of the educational tool that allows librarians, teachers and curriculum staff to share free or purchased resources across the district, schools or between users. Now in use by more than 4,000 districts and nearly 17,000 schools, usage of Collections by Destiny has increased 62 percent from year one to the 2018-19 school year.
Follett School Solutions Risks and Challenges
Following the acquisition of X2 and its Aspen SIS applications, Follett has boosted investment in the division, which is considered an engine of growth for the big company with 140 years of history selling school textbooks.
While Follett’s commitment to the education market has never been in doubt, how it goes about extending Aspen to other parts of Follett will be a grand experiment that its competitors from Pearson to Blackboard will be watching closely.
Another big question is whether Follett, whose main business is running a chain of 800 college bookstores, is willing to make additional software acquisitions in order to complete its transformation into a digital goods distributor and ultimately turning back on its tradition as a brick and mortar store.

In March 2020, Follett has launched a partner program that will make it easy for its Destiny and Aspen customers to implement time and cost-saving integrations and streamline data exchange with their existing vendors. The API (Application Programming Interface) Partner Program will allow Follett to help customers extend and enhance the capabilities of their Destiny and Aspen solutions and take full advantage of Follett’s open-APIs via the company’s growing partner portfolio.
In March 2019, in order to expand K–12 schools’ access to STEM learning tools, UBTECH Education and Follett have formed a partnership in which Follett will sell UBTECH’s educational STEM solutions, with a focus on the interactive JIMU robotic building block systems.
