Acumatica Strengths, Domain Expertise, and Key Differentiators

Founded in 2008, Acumatica is a provider of cloud business management software applications such as Financials, Distribution, CRM and Project Accounting, powered by a robust and flexible platform that empowers small and mid-size businesses.

Admittedly Acumatica’s Cloud ERP is not the most complete and fully functional Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) solution on the market today, but then most of its (small to medium size) customers couldn’t afford such a behemoth of a product. But it is a cloud-native, technology-enabled, feature-rich suite, and the feature set of the application, as well as the technology platform, are growing at an impressive rate. Acumatica listens carefully to its customers and delivers innovation that is practical and useful. It’s never about delivering technology in search of a problem. And even some of the simplest features can have an enormous impact on productivity and efficiency. But what clearly sets it apart is its innovative approach to business and its transparency and willingness to work with partners and customers. Acumatica has truly humanized the business of ERP.

Acumatica Recent Developments

Acumatica publishes 2 releases a year. And so both 2021 R1 and 2021 R2 are generally available. In addition to features added to Financials and CRM and each of its industry editions in 2021 R1, Acumatica continued to build out its comprehensive AI/ML mobile image recognition capabilities. Users can scan business cards with their mobile device camera and automatically create contacts within Acumatica’s CRM. In addition, Acumatica enhanced dashboard side panels with ordering and visibility and enabled users to seamlessly navigate to external URLs from General Inquiry results.

Although the product has always been very configurable, Acumatica 2021 R2 takes ERP configuration and customization a step further with personalization – adjusting Acumatica’s software to each customer’s individual needs. With 2021 R2, customers can reduce time spent finding actions and reports through a consolidated toolbar, and automate complex business processes without programming. Users can also react to data changes by creating tasks from business events, and boost productivity by automating administrative tasks and triggering notifications when key activities occur. In addition, technical users now have access to the new DAC Schema Browser to easily view data tables and field mappings.

The 2021 R2 update includes integrations with Microsoft Teams and Adobe Document Cloud. With the Acumatica for Microsoft Teams integration, customers can access the communication and collaboration features of Teams from directly within Acumatica, without switching between platforms. Similarly, Acumatica customers can use the Adobe Document Cloud integration to annotate, highlight, comment on PDF documents, and save updated versions with an audit trail and version control – all without leaving Acumatica. A proof of concept of third partnership was demonstrated in July, showcasing the integration with robotic process automation (RPA) vendor UiPath. While not yet generally available, it demonstrated nonetheless the kind of practical application of technology that Acumatica is known for. While Acumatica already has its own workflow engine, UiPath’s RPA adds significant value when dealing with repetitive processes.

In addition to new product releases, 2021 saw increased international expansion. In August 2021 Acumatica announced its accelerated expansion across Asia-Pacific (APAC) to enhance support channels and better serve customers in the South Asia region with a focus on Sri Lanka. Through Acumatica’s strong partner ecosystem and its international workforce, customers across South Asia will benefit from increased regional support for deployment and product feature updates, as well as time-sensitive issue resolution. Acumatica currently has more than 50 regional team members and nearly a dozen active resellers located throughout Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and the Maldives. These resellers mainly focus on the distribution, manufacturing, and construction industries. This announcement came about a month after Acumatica opened its new London office and the appointment of Deljit (Del) Singh as country manager for the United Kingdom (U.K.).

In January 2020, Acumatica unveiled Acumatica 2020 R1. Acumatica unveiled a multitude of new product features in Acumatica 2020 R1 as well, highlighting product advances in usability, powerful new native modules, best in class functionality, codeless personalization, and cross-connected workflows."

Acumatica Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) Activities

Acumatica made no acquisitions in 2021. However, it is still reaping the rewards of having been acquired in June 2019 by a global private equity firm, EQT Partners. The infusion of cash and the ability to tap into innovation of its now sister company IFS have further strengthened its product offering. Acumatica also continues to benefit from the acquisition of JAAS Systems in 2020 to strengthen its Manufacturing edition.

In June 2019, a global private equity firm, EQT Partners acquired Acumatica. The deal comes with an infusion of cash and a partnership with Swedish enterprise software provider Industrial and Financial Systems AB, which is significantly larger than Acumatica and is also owned by EQT.

Acumatica Market Opportunities, M&A and Geo Expansions

Acumatica describes itself as the fastest growing cloud ERP company and indeed it was poised for explosive growth on the eve of the global pandemic. While the pandemic slowed anticipated growth, Acumatica still continued to demonstrate a healthy run and close rate. Now with the expansion into the UK and South Asia and its attractiveness to SMBs, the company has even more opportunity for growth.

Acumatica and MYOB, an ERP vendor in Australia, announced a deal that enabled the latter to localize and distribute Acumatica’s Cloud-based ERP applications to Asia. The deal is similar to that of Visma, which resells Acumatica under its own name in the Scandinavian region.

In November 2018 – Acumatica and Gower, a diversified holding company with investments in manufacturing and distribution companies such as MP Husky, Engineered Products, and software companies Ordertrak and Jobscope, stepped into a wide-ranging partnership. This partnership involves Gower’s Ordertrak division expanding its presence in manufacturing ERP software and the cloud ERP market. Ordertrak is joining the Acumatica partner program and the Acumatica Developer Network (ADN), becoming an Acumatica reseller and ISV and delivering the Acumatica-Ordertrak solution. As proof of the joint commitment, the partnership has already produced its first customers Current Tool, Jackson Tool, and US Tool.

Acumatica Risks and Challenges

Acumatica sells exclusively through partners (350+ VARS, OEMs and 240+ ISVs). This is both a strength and a weakness. While it allows them to put (many) more feet on the street, they do relinquish a level of control. So far it has been more of a stregth than a weakness, but there is always risk involved in relying on 3rd parties to sell. Acumtaitc mitigates the risk with its strong partner program.

Acumatica Ecosystem, Partners, Resellers and SI

Acumatica does not sell directly, nor does it have any plans to do so. Therefore it relies heavily on its ecosystem, which continues to grow. There are 3 different ypes of partnerships, representing 3 different go-to-market models:  Acumatica branded resellers: Acumatica Cloud ERP is 100% sold through channel partners  Private label (OEM) business: Visma, and MYOB, Acceo, Senior Software and LexWare give Acumatica expanded international reach  xRP Cloud Platform for vertical ISVs (e.g. hotel or property management, non-profit fundraising, public housing, etc.) Acumatica continues to attract more partners, some of them cutting ties with less partner-friendly competitors.

Additionally, Acumatica continues to forge strong partnerships with technology vendors, including Microsoft, Adobe and UiPath. Plus Acumatica is able to run in a multi-cloud environment, including those supported by the major hyperscalers (Amazon’s AWS, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud).
