Trimble Recent Developments

In July 2020 Trimble introduced the latest version of its software platform for real-time displacement monitoring—Trimble 4D Control software (T4D). T4D version 6.0 introduces three- and 12-month subscriptions, and three-tiered edition options. These new subscription options give providers of monitoring services the flexibility to choose the appropriate subscription model based on the project duration. The new subscription levels reduce the upfront costs of real-time monitoring services for project stakeholders of critical transportation infrastructure, dams and mines, natural hazards, and buildings surrounding construction sites. This update also makes T4D ideal for companies looking to control expenses via the operating-expense (OPEX) model on a recurring basis.

The latest version of T4D enhances geotechnical gateway sensor data integration by adding support for a variety of Senceive sensors, as well as introducing a workflow for streaming data coming from Worldsensing devices that are connected to a local network. This further streamlines the integration of geotechnical data in monitoring projects, increasing the level of confidence in final deliverables. Integration with the Settop M1 monitoring controller, which enhances the operation of a Trimble total station, has been improved by adding diagnostic tools to allow remote system troubleshooting and minimize monitoring project downtime.

In September 2019, Trimble acquired 3LOG Systems, a supplier of timber management software solutions. The acquisition complements Trimble's forestry business software portfolio and further expands the Trimble Connected Forest solutions, which offer a complete end-to-end ecosystem for forest management, traceability, and timber processing.

In April 2018, Trimble acquired Viewpoint from Bain Capital in an all-cash transaction valued at $1.2 billion. Viewpoint is highly complementary to Trimble's e-Builder business and will extend Trimble's ability to provide a more complete and integrated project, Jobsite, and business workflows across the construction lifecycle. The acquisition will round out Trimble's comprehensive construction technology portfolio and position Trimble to further its strategy to lead the industry's transformation. With Viewpoint, Trimble will be able to offer customers a central workflow platform for delivering integrated, end-to-end construction management, while further enabling connectivity across the complete construction lifecycle.

In addition, Viewpoint will complement Trimble's recent acquisition of e-Builder, a leading SaaS-based construction program management solution for capital program owners and program management firms. The viewpoint will further extend these capabilities with a focus on general, specialty, and heavy civil contractors, and link project data into the owner-facing e-Builder suite for end-to-end project transparency.

Trimble Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A) Activities

In January 2020 Trimble has acquired privately-held Kuebix, a leading transportation management system (TMS) provider and creator of North America's largest connected shipping community. This acquisition will enable Trimble to bring together its network of the private fleet and commercial carrier customers, which collectively represent more than 1.3 million commercial trucks in North America, with Kuebix's extensive community of more than 21,000 shipping companies, creating a powerful new platform for planning, execution, and freight demand-capacity matching.

This acquisition will augment Trimble's comprehensive transportation technology portfolio and position Trimble to further its strategy to lead the industry's transformation. The Kuebix acquisition will allow Trimble to break down technology barriers, enable actionable visibility, and improve collaboration by delivering a single logistics platform for all participants in the supply chain. This Software-as-a-Service (SaaS), multi-tenant, cloud platform will optimize the entire logistics process from order management to financial settlement, improving efficiency and asset utilization for carriers and giving shippers access to expanded capacity and reduced costs.

Trimble has expanded its solutions offerings by acquiring the best of breed technology companies. Trimble's latest acquisition was Cityworks, a provider of enterprise asset management (EAM) software for utilities and local government.

In February 2018, the company has acquired e-Builder, a SaaS-based construction program management solution for capital program owners and program management firms. e-Builder extends Trimble's ability to accelerate industry transformation by providing an integrated project delivery solution for owners, program managers, and contractors across the design, construct and operate lifecycle.

Trimble Market Opportunities, M&A and Geo Expansions

In May 2020 Trimble and Kuebix introduced new capabilities for its Community Load Match platform, a solution that facilitates collaboration between shippers and carriers to optimize how freight moves throughout the supply chain. Kuebix is a Trimble Company and part of the Transportation Sector. This latest version of Community Load Match marks the first milestone in achieving Trimble and Kuebix's mission of a connected transportation supply chain since Kuebix was acquired in January 2020. Now, Community Load Match enables shippers to use advanced matching capabilities to more easily find available carriers for their truckload shipments and leverage improved map visualization through Trimble MAPS. For carriers, these capabilities give them direct access to Kuebix's community of more than 20,000 shippers for matching shipment requirements with available truckload capacity.

Trimble's competitive position is maintained through the development and introduction of new products, including software and services, that incorporate improved features and functionality, better performance, smaller size and weight, lower cost, or some combination of these factors. They invest substantially in the development of new products. They also make a significant investment in the positioning, communication, and information technologies that underlie their products and will likely provide competitive advantages.

Across industries and applications and around the world, Trimble innovation enables economic breakthroughs—enhancing safety, boosting compliance, and reducing environmental impact. Furthermore, their portfolio includes over 1,200 patents and serves as the basis for the broadest positioning offerings in the industry. Trimble augments its organic product development with strategic acquisitions to bring the latest positioning technologies to a wider market.

In 2018, Trimble acquired Viewpoint. Viewpoint is a provider of integrated software solutions for the construction industry.

Trimble Risks and Challenges

Trimble's heavy investment in construction vertical will be tested in 2020 as the pandemic is upending a host of asset-intensive industries with severe economic pressures being felt among small and midsized contractors and subcontractors that are already debt-laden. With over 500 products and heavy investments in mobile, construction, and other verticals that require heavy use of mapping, weather, and location data, Trimble is in a sweet spot as natural resources become scarcer than ever. The question is whether customers can leverage such a large portfolio of products and expect continuous enhancements if they decide to standardize on its platform.

Trimble Ecosystem, Partners, Resellers and SI

Trimble's software is sold as a perpetual license or as a subscription and can be delivered for on-premise installation or in a hosted environment as Software as a Service (SaaS). Its global operations include major development, manufacturing, or logistics operations in the United States, Sweden, Finland, Germany, New Zealand, Canada, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, China, and India.

Products are sold in more than 100 countries, through dealers, representatives, joint ventures, and other channels throughout the world, as well as direct sales to end-users. Sales are supported by its own offices located in 40 countries around the world.

Among its technology partners are Kimvio, KMD, JLL Technology Solutions, ROI Consulting Group, Impec Group, BGIS, HOK, and many others.
