When I Work Market Opportunities, M&A and Geo Expansions

In November 2021, When I Work, a messaging app that lets shift-based teams schedule work and more raises $200M.The funding is coming from a single investor, Bain Capital (specifically its Tech Opportunities fund), and while the pair are not disclosing valuation, it’s being described as a “majority growth investment”, which implies something around $400 million. CEO Martin Hartshorne said in an interview that When I Work is profitable, and it has been since June of last year — notable, considering we were in the depths of pandemic living and economic uncertainty — and its steady rise was the reason for raising now, after raising just $24 million in the 11 years prior.

In September 2021, When I Work, and Clair, a New York-based financial technology company today announced a partnership to offer free on-demand pay through Clair’s Payday Wallet to shift-based workplaces that use When I Work. Through this partnership, When I Work and Clair build on their legacies as pioneers in workforce management and financial technology by offering When I Work shift workers the ability to get free access to their earnings every day after they clock out of work. The two companies accelerate a growing trend of workforce management companies providing employee benefits as part of their product offerings.

In 2016, When I Work secured $15 million in a Series B round led by Drive Capital. Arthur Ventures and High Alpha also participated. This followed a $9 million Series A led by e.ventures, Greycroft Partners and Arthur Ventures, bringing the company's total financing to date to $24 million.

When I Work Risks and Challenges

Greg Wallace, When I Work's first chief financial officer, is helping to carry out a growth strategy as the hourly workforce management company seeks to triple revenue and reach millions of additional users globally. When I Work reduced full-time staff by about one-third in April as pandemic-related shutdowns challenged customers and slowed business. The decline was not as sharp as forecast, however, and business has grown year over year but ended short of 2020's original plan, Wallace said. Wallace previously was senior finance manager at Code42 and held several financial roles at HighJump Software.

In July 2021, Octavian Tarcea joined as the company's new chief technology officer. Octavian Tarcea will lead the development of those applications, which he says make for "happier and more productive teams" at shift-based workplaces.

In April 2020, As a result of the global pandemic Coronavirus, When I Work laid off 55 full-time employees, eight part-time employees and furloughed one full-time employee. The cuts affect around 35% of the company’s workforce.
