In 2015 Allegheny Health Network implemented AppWorx Workload Automation from Broadcom as a Business Process Management platform to centralize batch scheduling and orchestration across its Pittsburgh academic medical center network. The deployment targeted IT operations and database administration workflows to standardize job orchestration for development and production environments.
AppWorx Workload Automation was configured for enterprise scheduling, dependency management, calendar and event driven triggers, and automated job chains to support SQL Server maintenance plans and ETL workloads. Implementation work included authoring stored procedures and automation scripts to invoke database tasks and SSIS packages, aligning workload definitions with existing DBA processes and ticketing and change management procedures.
The automation layer integrated with Microsoft SQL Server estates that were being upgraded from SQL Server 2005 through SQL Server 2012/2014, and was deployed alongside infrastructure patterns such as Always ON availability, clustering, mirroring and log shipping, and virtualized SQL instances on VMware. AppWorx orchestration was used in concert with storage and backup tooling including Snap Manager and Nimble solutions, and with Central Management Server configurations for consolidated SQL instance administration.
Governance and rollout emphasized documented installation and migration steps, staged deployments into development and production, and operational handoffs to DBAs who managed job definitions and monitoring. Monitoring and operational support continued through existing tools such as CheckMK and SolarWinds, with the workload automation platform embedded into AHN processes for scheduled maintenance, backups, and batch data warehouse updates.
