In 2023 Alperia deployed Fortinet FortiGate NGFW as its Next Generation Firewall to converge and harden OT and IT security across a geographically distributed utility footprint. The deployment supports Alperia's operational environment that includes 200 remote sites, 34 hydroelectric power stations, seven district heating plants, a 9,200 kilometer electricity grid, and over 1,000 electric vehicle charging points, and follows a decision to bring management of these critical networks in house to improve control and regulatory reporting.
The implementation centered on Fortinet FortiGate NGFW Rugged appliances for OT segmentation and protocol aware inspection, with FortiManager and FortiAnalyzer used for centralized configuration, logging, analytics, and compliance reporting. FortiGate Rugged devices were configured for deep packet inspection to identify common ICS and SCADA protocols, intrusion prevention signatures were applied to block OT malware and malicious traffic, and device templates were created to enable zero touch provisioning to remote, often unmanned sites. FortiGate NGFWs were also deployed in high availability clusters at main branch offices to increase throughput and resilience.
Integration extended to the Fortinet Security Fabric to unify protection across on premise OT networks and newly adopted AWS cloud services, implementing a hybrid mesh firewall approach to maintain consistent policies between IT, OT, and cloud. The program included FortiGuard Labs threat intelligence for continuously updated signatures and aligned with Alperia's three year enterprise agreement with Fortinet. Selection and operational onboarding were supported by the partner KONVERTO, and Alperia has started evaluating Fortinet web application firewall and sandboxing options to protect cloud exposed services such as PLC support portals.
Governance and process changes focused on centralized administration and consolidated audit trails to simplify compliance across EU regulations and to manage secure third party contractor access. Bringing management in house reduced reliance on multiple external providers, and using centralized policy templates and logging simplified ongoing administration. Explicit outcomes reported by Alperia include enhanced security through secure OT zoning, increased visibility and simplified administration through the hybrid mesh firewall approach, and reduced operating expenses while improving network reliability, resilience, and operational efficiency.
